Imagine all the hacking the Chinese government could do with this supercomputer.

Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology, is the world’s new No. 1 system with a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark, according to the 41stedition of the twice-yearlyTOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. The list was announced June 17 during the opening session of the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig, Germany.

They have one at the top. But how many do they have total? It's easy to be the top dog, but if the wolfpack eats you anyway, does anyone care? And this is only publishes systems. Want to bet that some alphabet agency does not have something better?

Fact of the matter is the Chinese are lacking in innovation, but big on imitation. I'd still be willing to bet there are much more powerful computers in the NATO food chain. ;)

Also, there's enough valid criticism about the benchmark used to rank these (LINPACK). In many scenarios Tianhe-2 is probably fastest, but for a particular application the architecture of another system may be more suitable for efficiently solving other problems.

It's still interesting that two of the top supercomputers (#1 & #6) have chosen Xeon Phi over Tesla, when the K20x offers higher performance per GPU. In the link it states that CPU+GPU systems have decreased from 62 to 54 vs 6 months ago (3 AMD, rest Nvidia GPUs). It will be interesting to see whether this trend continues 6 months from now.

Heh, not anymore.
Didn't take long for Intel to nock them down a notch.
