Been out of the building loop for a while so I don't know what gpu is what :) .

I play at 1680x1050 and can run all games except Skyrim on highest - just like something as good as or a bit better in the $100-200 range

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black
Scythe MUGEN-2/Antec 120mm Tri-Cool
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
G.Skill 4GB PC2 8500
XFX Radeon HD 4870 1GB
Crucial m4 64GB SATA SSD (Boot)
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA
Antec Sonata III 500 Black w/earthwatts500W PSU
Win7 64bit

HD6850/70 These are about 30% - 40%faster
HD6950 About 50% faster
HD7770 About 10% if that?
HD7850 Dont know how much faster.

Thanks for the help - looks like i'll go with one of the shorter 7850s (sonata case).

Visiontek
XFX

Lol. Prices are pathetic. Paid $100 for my 4870 2-3 years ago and it cost $200 to get twice the performance.

This means, now is not the time to upgrade unless you really hate playing at the settings that you are now.

Replaced a 4870 with a 7850 in one of my PC's, was a great upgrade. You won't miss the heat either.

If you're concerned about Skyrim performance you'll probably want to overclock your CPU as well, since Skyrim is pretty dependent on having fast cores (even though it only uses 2)

you certainly aren't playing many newer games then with that 4870. but yeah go with the 7850 and oc your cpu a little. personally I would also grab another 4gb of ram or sell the ram you have and get an 8gb matched kit.

some of your numbers are way off.

6950 is about 80-85% faster
7770 is about 25-30% faster
7850 is about 85-90% faster

the 7850 has tons of overclocking headroom too.

Replaced my 4870 with an HIS IceQ X Turbo (factory overclocked to 1000MHz core frequency). The new card is actually a little shorter than the 9.6" 4870 was, so it fit my Antec SLK 3700-BQE midtower. It's quite silent and Skyrim temps run around 45C (ambient 28C). Unigine Heaven temps is 66C at 1125/1350 with fan set at constant 40% and barely audible.

You are right - I think Skyrim is the most demanding game i'm playing now. (Too many Steam sales of older titles/indie games :) ) I liked the matched set of 8gb as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sapphire and HIS both look really nice.
