I have a turtle beach montenegro and my receiver does not have optical in. Can I run optical from my BR player to the optical input of my sound card and then run 5.1 analog to my receiver and get sound from both the computer and BR player?

TIA

Reading the link:

Many Montego DDL owners ask us if it is possible to play
the game sound from their Xbox or PS3 into the Montego
DDL's optical digital (S/PDIF) input, have the Montego DDL
decode the Dolby Digital audio, and play the surround
soundtrack through their computer speakers.

Unfortunately, the answer to this is "no."

1) Neither the Montego DDL nor your computer can *decode*
Dolby Digital or DTS audio data streams coming from the
S/PDIF Input to 5.1 surround sound playback through the
Montego DDL's analog outputs (Green, Black, Orange).

2) The S/PDIF In is designed for recording PCM stereo audio
from digital audio players such as CD/DVD players.

3) Audio coming in the S/PDIF In will not be heard until it
has been saved to hard disk on the computer. This means
that you won't be able to hear what you're recording
until after it's actually been recorded onto your
computer's hard drive.

It sounds to me like the answer is no because (obviously) you can't plug fiber in and have the soundcard output the results.

HOWEVER. If some program were to take the incomming stream and run it through a decoder -- I don't see why it wouldn't work. I just don't know if anything is out there to do that.

You could try AC3Filter, I use it on my mediapc for outputting spdif to a receiver, but it appears to have enough options to sink a battleship.

nope.

i was looking into this as well to get my xbox 360 hooked up to my logitech x540 system on my pc. supposedly there's a discontinued creative-xfi model soundcard that had that option (i think, i'm not 100%). but all i found was that it could accept 2 channel over optical, but could not decode 5.1.

you'll need a new receiver.
