Attempting to make a list of affordable 1920x1080

So I can decide on a display for myself. I've been using a 15" HP CRT screen and it's dying. I need to get a new one. I'm not ready to build my next computer yet, probably in 2009, but I can't wait that long to get a monitor.

What I want is an 8-bit panel, 24". I know, I know, everyone wants one of these nowadays. I'm looking for a less expensive one. Officemax apparently no longer carries the Soyo. HDMI would have been a plus but it can transmit the same image quality as DVI anyway so that's not a huge concern whether it has HDMI or not.

I understand I'll be paying upwards of $1000 for an IPS screen, but I can't really afford to do that. Unless there's a cheaper one I don't know about. From what I hear, PVA is slightly preferable to MVA, so I'm thinking a PVA. But really, any "less expensive" 8-bit panel would do. Suggestions?

I do have my heart set on 8-bit color. Thanks, I will look into those!

(edit) What a spectacular wealth of information... perfect!

Yeah absolutely, those definitely qualify (at least in my mind) as affordable. I'm looking for monitors with 8-bit panels though. I'll go ahead and sift through those, see if any have that.

(edit) Yeah, those all look like TN panels. I found the FP241W and W241D though, which look fantastic but expensive. I'm looking for a less expensive PVA panel without serious backlight bleed, and with DVI and/or HDMI.

Good Luck.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have been researching for a few months now and it amazes me that even if you increase your base price from $300 even over 60% to $500 you still can't find anything that isn't TN.

I paid almost $700 for a Gateway 2485W a couple years ago and sold it last summer. Bought a new one a few months ago for $300 on craigslist. It has everything you want (8 bit, believe its PVA) and they have refurbs at tigerdirect for $325.

Well, TN panels are not true 8-bit, but in most cases their frame rate control works pretty well.
