Hello everyone, I am curious about your assumption of 980 Ti's percent performance increase from 780 Ti. I am asking because I am considering to get it. I am interested if it's 50% or more performance than 780 Ti.

Thanks!

Well considering the 980ti (rumor) would be the same as a Titan X, except only 6gb of memory, and clocked higher, you can expect Titan X performance (or higher) if the rumors are true.

Otherwise who the fuck knows!

Well IIRC the Titan X is roughly a solid 40% over the GTX 980 across the board and the GTX 980 is roughly 5-15% extra performance over the GTX 780 Ti, so I think it would be safe to say you'll be right on or slightly above that 50% mark.

It really depends on whether the rumors are true that it'll be the exact same card with simply half the memory.

My vote is that the 980ti will be in the middle of the Titan X and 980 both for performance and price. Maybe slightly better value but nothing too crazy...

I say the 980 ti or whatever they call it will be the full chip with just 6 GB of vram though. And I also think it will launch much sooner than previous rumors have said. ;)

misterbobby knows something. If I went single Titan X I might be a little annoyed if the 980ti is the full chip. Dual Titan X I'd probably want the 12GB for SLI anyways. Might actually have the grunt to use above 6GB.

I certainly hope soon.

I currently play at 3k and my 680 had been awesome for me it is, however, starting to have troubles keeping up. With MMOs frame rate is largely irrelevant so long as you can manage 15-20fps (in the demanding fights/areas) and the the engine stays responsive to the player.

Along with the above there also needs to be no tearing and no artifacting. I suspect image quality is much more important MMO side then FPS side.

To point and on topic, I am already starting to hit the vram wall with my 4gb. My current big game, The Secret World seldom goes over 2gb. Elder Scrolls Online I have gotten to the 3 & 3/4gb range. I dont know if it would use more or if the various systems try to keep a margin open.

From his sig looks like he is running 3 40" panels at 1080 each, I think he is calling that 3k. I can understand the mistake if you aren't familiar with the numbering system. After all, even 4k isn't really true 4k, it's kind of confusing at first.

It makes no sense for Nvidia to call this card 980ti when it's a cut down version of titan x. Maybe GTX990 would make more sense or some form of Titan brand but no way a 980ti. GTX780 was a different line when they cut down the og titan. GTX780ti was a more improved GTX780 with more shaders, just less vram.

There are plenty of things that make no sense at all in the video card industry. I think they may call it something different too though so they can have a cut down version. Maybe 990 ti with cut down 2560 sp version called the 990. Or maybe even call it the 1080 with cut down version being called the 1070.

Shadow of Mordor already uses up 6.1GB of VRAM at max settings at 4k, and that's not even a "next-gen" engine. I went Titan X and have been happy as a clam.

The 390X, if it does ship with a 8GB VRAM model, would also be a nice option at its $749 price point. But the 980 Ti at 6GB for me is a no go due to 4k and VRAM needs, all of my cards must have 8GB or more moving forward.

If you're below 4k, no problem, the 980 Ti is a great choice assuming it offers near-Titan X levels of fps.

GTX x90 is reserved for dual-CPU cards like the GTX 690.

And we have all been assuming that this card would be called the 980 Ti, but that is not necessarily what Nvidia will call it. For all we know, they might call it the Titan Wee, because W comes before X, and they're probably reserving Titan Y for the next generation. They can't go anywhere else with the X monikor, because a Titan XX would be female, and a Titan XXX would be mistaken for porn.

Titan D of course for the big Pascal. :)

980ti makes sense to me since the 900 series was just released. Some people think 1080ti... So they would have to rebrand the entire line or have one card, of the same architecture, sitting out by itself. I guess we'll have to see.

The rumor now says that the card will see word between 19th and 26th May... which is logic choice for NV, as it's Witcher 3 release date. So people who will want to upgrade their old hardware to play Witcher, will get something new and shiny.

I know it's too good to believe, but I'd like very much it to be true. After upgrade to 1440p, my single 970 is not enough to play everything on max, and I could use upgrade. Don't want to go to 2nd one because of VRAM issues, and 980 is rather sidegrade.

I am def waiting on the 390x/980ti reviews before plunging into another upgrade this year...i have an itch that needs scratching.

People keep saying this, but I don't think it will be clocked higher. The reference design will probably have the GPU clocked either at the same level as the Titan X or slightly below it. AIB partners can make their own designs and can control the clocks so there is a lot of opportunity for factory overclocked cards which isn't allowed for the Titan X. So I'm expecting the 980Ti to be roughly the same as the Titan or slightly slower at stock clocks with half the VRAM. An 8GB version may also not be out of the question.

I don't think NVIDIA is going to shit on the Titan X owners by making the 980Ti faster even if it does have less VRAM. It was one thing when the old Titan was a double precision card that had professional uses beyond gaming as it fit a niche in between the GeForce and Quadro lines. This time the Titan X is single precision so they would sell very few Titan X if the 980Ti were actually the better card. The people pushing 4K and beyond right now are slim and very few people could actually justify going to the Titan X over the 980Ti. I mean if you have to cannabilize sales its best to do it to yourself rather
let your competition do it but making the 980Ti that much faster will piss off your current Titan X customers and kill sales of the card pretty much completley.

The 980TI will definitely be a cut down version of the Titan X, if not then what is NVidia doing with the Titan X cores that aren't making the cut?

Maybe it'll be a 2560 core part and "5GB 320-bit with a 64-bit 1GB side port" ... :D

May 26th would be perfect! Need my 2 980ti's NOW!

All I gotta say if it happens is, CALLED IT lol. Nvidia doing the same shenanigans as last time pretending like a 6 month window to get more sales when in reality it turns out being a 2 month time table.

Better news than last time given they started with a GTX 780 then moved to the 780Ti.

Lets hope so, I'd like a second X on the discount...:D

If that happened Titan X's would still go for near what they do now until the stock just dried up. You wouldn't get much of a discount. Retailers and etail stores aren't going to take a loss on something like that. There is a fair amount of margin in high end video cards so they have some room to play with, but given how low stock levels of them generally are I think they'd be able to deplete their stock without having to slash prices much if at all. And there would be people that would still opt for the Titan X just because it has more VRAM than the 980Ti. Though people who would do that would be few and far between.

Again, I think we'll see faster 980Ti's but they won't be reference designs or cards adhering to factory clock speeds. I think they'll practically be the same thing except the Titan X will have 4-6GB more VRAM.

Happened with the previous titan release, looks like it will happen again. Titan x will be a 1k premium for 4gb vram

Same here, 980 ti is very likely to be my next upgrade assuming it's released pretty soon (which I'm not certain of).

Isn't this sort of what NVIDIA did with the 750 Ti? It was a totally different architecture from the other 700 series cards, but was still mixed into the 700 series. It was the only Maxwell card available for a while before the 900 series released.

The $600+ price segment is about to get shook up this summer. 390, 390X, two new GTX 900 cards.
The 1% of the PC gaming community is sooooooooo excited.

GeForce GTX 980 “metal enhanced version” -- doesn't that mean chip revision?

GeForce GTX 980 “metal enhanced version” -- doesn't that mean chip revision?

That would indicate a respin yes.

So not a GM200-400-A1, but a GM200-400-Bx (or a GM210-400-Ax die depending on how much where changed on the chip)

"metal enhanced version" makes me think that rather than calling it a GTX 980 Metal. they will be using some other element. For example, GTX 980 Au (for gold). Hm, I dunno about Au. Fe is iron, but that doesn't sound right to me either. Cu for copper? Pt for platinum? Maybe they will just call it the GTX 980 Gold.
