meh its only a 12 pipeline card :(

So is the X800 Pro :p.

I'd still get the 6800GT. For $100 more you get a faster card and the right to gloat that your card is faster than the X800 Pro.

Is this card actually worth the extra $90 over a 9800Pro?

If you haven't bought the 9800PRO yet, definitely. This card is around 15%-30% faster than a 9800XT. If you already have a 9800PRO, I'd be looking more to upgrade to a 6800GT because you might lose a lot of money selling the 9800PRO.

Found some benchmarks, 9800XT actually outperformed some games, so I think ill just go with the pro and overclock it

Well, the 9800pro does cost less.

For others who want to see performance of this card versus a 9800xt, check out this anand article:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2113&p=4

For comparison: (win = 5fps or higher score than the competition, * means the card won by 10fps or more, tie means score difference was less than 5fps)
6800 vs 9800XT

Aquamark - 6800 win

no AA/AF
EVE: The Second Genesis - tie
FarCry - 6800 win*
Final Fantasy XI - tie
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - 6800 win*
Unreal Tournament 2004 (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
Unreal Tournament 2004 (1600x1200) - 6800 win
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - 6800 win*
X2: The Threat (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
X2: The Threat (1600x1200) - 6800 win*

4x AA/8xAF
EVE: The Second Genesis - tie
F1 Challenge (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
F1 Challenge (1600x1200) - 6800 win
FarCry - tie
Halo (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
Halo (1600x1200) - 6800 win*
Homeworld 2 (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
Homeworld 2 (1600x1200) - 6800 win*
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - 6800 win*
Neverwinter Nights - 6800 win*
Unreal Tournament 2004 (1280x1024) - tie
Unreal Tournament 2004 (1600x1200) - tie
Warcraft 3 - 6800 win
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - 6800 win*
X2: The Threat (1280x1024) - 6800 win*
X2: The Threat (1600x1200) - tie

Remember, the $210 9800pro is significantly slower than the 9800xt.

The results from anandtech above show that the 6800 beats the 9800xt in most games, often by 10fps+ with a few exceptions.

Whether its worth the extra $90 over the 9800PRO though is up to the invidividual.

Buy.com has the PNY 6800 on sale for $250, might make the decision a little easier ;)

Yeah that deal goes along with the "Egg needs more crack money" $540 Chaintech 6800 GT. :)

Well, that link doesnt work for me, but in the benchmarks I saw, the XT definatly had the edge over the 6800 in most games with 4xAA 8xAF. Also, the 9800Pro is not significantly slower than at XT, which is why the XT is such a ripoff. I would probably be willing to be you that you couldnt fine a Pro that wouldnt overclock to XT speeds, and it if you did, it woudl be a fluke. With better cooling, there is no reason you cant. The reason I got the pro is a found a 256mb Pro used cheaper than any other pro ive seen on the boards, only $160. I could toss up another $15 for a Actic VGA Silencer, and clock it past XT speeds, and with the 256MB ram...it would be an XT. All that, and its still almost $100 cheaper (that the buy price, its over $100 cheaper than neweggs price). At this point, even if your benchmarks were more accurate than mine, a few fps more isnt worth $100.

Link works fine for me now, try again. It's off anand's webpage, he benched through a bunch of games with the most recent drivers for each card.

Well, it's not just "a few" fps. As you noticed above I considered it a tie if the difference between the cards was less than 5fps, and a large portion of the games had a 10fps or greater difference which is significant (the ones with an asterisk were 10fps difference or more).

That being said, for the extra cash you are also getting more features, like Shader Model 3.0, and FP16 blending for HDR lighting in games like farcry. Again though, to each his own, its up to each individual to make their own decision whether its worth the money or not.

When you posted all those 6800 wins....were you looking at the FPS or the value? I found that same link days before, and with AA and AF, the 9800XT does beat the 6800 in a few games for FPS, just not value (because the XT is rediculostly expensive, my 256MB 9800Pro is over $100 less than the 6800 on newegg, the buy.com is gone, and I can just buy a better cooler and OX it past XT anyways)

I was looking at FPS score. You can check it out yourself. There was a game or two where the 9800xt beat the 6800, but it is was by 1-3 fps, making it insignificant (hence tie - there were also some where the 6800 beat the 9800xt by 1-3 fps but I considered that a tie as well). On the other hand, as you can see from the above chart, most of the games the 6800 beats the 9800xt by over 10fps (15-20 in some games), which is significant. And in addition to beating it in performance, the 6800 has more graphical features than the 9800xt. Unless you are really strapped for cash and can't spend the extra $50, I'd go with the 6800. If you already bought a used 9800PRO which means you probably can't return it, then I guess its not worth thinking about anymore :)

The buy.com $250 6800 link is still up for order:
