I'm wanting to upgrade my videocard and I'm thinking that 6600gt is the way to go. How much faster is it then the 9700pro? Should I even upgrade my current box with a 6600gt?

Specs in sig

Ok, know this, an X800 Pro is said to be 3x better then the 9800 XT. So you can compare an X800 Pro to a 6600GT, so your getting roughly 3x better performance. In my opinion, definately an upgrade worth doing. Besides that, the 9700 Pro's lick ass, common knowledge.

Wow, you're just full of magical crap, aren't you?

6600GT's are a lot slower than x800Pros. A better comparison to the x800Pro is the 6800Regular.

9700Pro's don't lick ass, they kick it with significant force.

Upgrading, if you can really call it that, to a 6600GT is kinda like going diagonal with an upward slope. Yes, you'll see some improvements but not worth whatever you paid for the card. A real upgrade would be to a 6800 regular or GT. Then you will see significant gains.

... All credibility out of the window.

After nuking my beloved 9700PRO I went ahead and bought a 6600GT AGP and was quite pleased with the jump in performance. I'd say it was anywhere from 50-100% than the Radeon in many newer applications. If you are pressed for cash a 6600GT is a great way to go. If you can afford to spend a bit more, a 6800 would be an even better bet, and is comparable to the X800 boards. :)

i think you would see a jump b/c a 6600gt will beat a 9800.

not to mention it supports more features.

if you sell your 9700 on ebay , you could probably pick up the 6600gt for cheaper.

Now if U compare them all to a X800XL where does that land then... Trying to give good advice here and Ive sort of said that the 800XL is good value for money.

I should be reporting the difference between 9700 and 6600 next week if all goes well.

One complaint I have is that it is near impossible to find benchmarks comparing 6200/6600/6800 series to 9500/9700 series.

From what I can tell from Tom's Hardware (only site with comparisons that I can make between reviews to see the actual performance of a 6600/GT), the 6600 is nearly identical to the 9700. The 6600GT is midway between a 9800XT and a 6800.

From a 9700 Pro you are looking at a 20-30% inprovement across the board. I would not go for the 6600GT unless you are changing to PCIe. If you are looking at the 6600GT as an AGP replacement, I would look higher.

I went with a 9700 to 6600 conversion because the 6600's have fairly decent overclocking potential and because I'm moving to PCIe. It's not really an upgrade, but considering I picked up the refurb 6600 for $67, I don't really care.

I play everything with my 9700 Pro ....it still kicks major ass. I dont know what you are talking about...mabye some newer games at ultra high resolutions, or doom3 at ultra high detail.

i say go for it if you want 6600GT is good card id go for it if you dont have the cash for a X800XL or 6800

the 6600GT is bit faster then a 9800XT soo if that helps any
but id look in to a 6800 or X800XL depending on who you like more ATi or NV both are good cards and if you look the 6800 can be had for ~250 not much more then a 6600GT

hey dude

i went from a 9600XT (almost as good as a 9700 pro) to an XpertVision Geforce 6600GT and the difference in performance is quite significant.....games like doom 3, far cry and half-life 2 are a LOT smoother....and i can crank up the res and AA and AF settings.......doom 3 plays PERFECT as 1024 high qual......it did 77fps in the timedemo....whereas my 9600XT did 29fps in the same demo with the same settings.....

this card is essentially 2x faster.....cuz u have 2x the fillrate and about 1.6x the mem bandwidth...

9600XT 6600GT
3dmark03 4300 8400
3dmark05 1620 3750 (over 2x faster)

so it really comes down to your decision....although laying out some more cash to get a 6800GT or X800XL may be worth it.......cuz i was supposed to get a 6200...then decided to get a 6600 and then decided that it was more wise to wait a while and get the 6600GT.....and im glad i did........so for you itll be the same thing, except you're starting your choice with a 6600GT ;-)

hope my info helps

So very much  its not even funny.

ANYways, yes you would see an imporvement, but maybe waiting for a full system upgrade would be a bit better, especially since then you can get PCI-E

6600GT is a great card for the $. I have one here at work and it plays everything I toss at it. Doom3, HL2, etc. 1024 with eye candy. :)

Ok, just setup my rig with the 6600 last night. Stock gaming it feels smoother than the 9700NP, overclocked I run at nearly double the res I used to. :)

x700 is about 2x faster than 9700 Pro (ATI said that)

and 6600GT beats X700 128 MB and X700 256 MB version.

If you do plan to upgrade, I suggest you get the PCI-E 6600GT.

Definitely worth the money. I think its the best card that nvidia produced for its price and performance.

Ok Icurrently have a 9800 modded to a pro its fine but it is AGP.

Going to be building a new computer soon, I was going to get a 6800gt but I hear that the next gen cards will be out soonish.

My question is should I spend the money for the 6800gt or drop to a 6600gt and upgrade when the new card prices drop a little?

Future specs if it will help

the new card wont be out for at least 6 monthes. keep waiting

I'm in a similar situation, replacing my 9700pro with either a 6600gt or a 6800gt refurb. I dont plan on upgrading my current computer anytime soon, getting a new laptop instead. I think that the 6800gt would be more future proof, but its a refurb from Newegg and will be useless when I do upgrade. So, 6600gt or 6800gt?
