Im reading conflicting reviews on these two cards. Some say the 4890 blows the 285gtx out of the water. But other places (and people) tell me the opposite.

Has anyone used both of these cards? Trying to decide what I want to go with in the end.

HD 4890 ~ GTX 285 according to latest [H] review.

Pick up a reference model if you can, the non reference HD 4890 models (different heatsink and crappier pwms) don't overclock as well as the reference ATI design.

This. ATI's drivers have caught up.

I had the same debacle related to OP during my computer upgrade. All else equal, the 4890 costs a good fortune less than the 285 and I went with the more bang-per-buck option. See sig for specs.

I would choose the 4890 out of the two, as it is much cheaper and nearly the same performance.

Performance-wise, you can go either way. Sometimes the 4890 is faster than the GTX 285, sometimes it's slower than a GTX 275, depending on the game.

Price-wise, the 4890 is $165 to $200 on newegg, while the GTX 285 is $360. That makes the choice easy.

What he said. I can't believe some of the prices I see on some of the 285's still. I got mine shortly after release for $340 + a game. Same card is $380 at newegg today.

The reason I asked is because I have a 4890 right now, but its "broken" and being RMA'ed. I was considering jumping back to Nvidia, but considering the 4890 is $200 or less and the 285 is 300+.

I think i'll just RMA my card back to the manufacturer and hope they send me a 4890 that performs better then my 8800GTS

If you're going to spend $300+ there's no reason to look at anything other than a 5850 IMO. Short of that, stick with the 4890.

4890 for price wise but if u want extra fps for almost $200 more than 4890 go for it. Its your money.
you can get 2 x 4890 almost same price or less than 285(newegg price) that will blow out gtx285

really dont know why nvidia is not dropping price of their cards.

really? i paid $159 each for both of the msi oc hd4890 i have, probably 6 months ago. still around $200? how about that. ati prices do not plummet like nvidia prices, for sure.

I would go with the 4890 over the GTX 285, no questions asked. The 5850 vs 4890 is where the real decision to be made is. The only real question is can you afford to spend $300 on a video card? If so the 5850 is a much better choice than the 285.

Unless of course money is no object. If that is the case, and you like Nvidia, I see no reason to hold back. Go with GTX.

meh gtx 285 is probably the most overpriced gpu right now price/performance sucks deeply. i mean you can buy gtx 275 if you hardcore nvidia fan and still get simillar performance or if you have so much money basically get 5850 which still is cheaper but performs much better overclocks like champion and draws less power has newer tech etc
