Probably buying a second pair of AKG K501 for like $150 or so off ebay some years ago. It may be my favorite headphone I own and being discontinued I figured I should have a backup set.
I probably put in like 10 minutes into this second set just to make sure it worked.
On the bright side...
A lot of Windows 10 stuff is up in the air. I've read rumors of everything up to making it eventually free to a annual subscription plan. I don't think Microsoft has even decided yet.
I dunno, from personal experience and from what I've read, they tend to crap out at an alarming rate.
The passive speaker route will give the best bang for the buck. Though if you want a simpler "computer speaker" route, Swans makes the best systems hands down.

Is that what they charge you for the individual part or is that what it really costs them to produce?
Also the mindless Beats bashing by headphone nerds isn't quite so justifiable anymore. It's been accepted by most that have tried the newest revisions that they at least semi-decent...
Oh please. What do you think is the bill of materials for any medium end headphone? Do you seriously think making a HD595 costs more than a pair of Beats?
I think Swans makes the best "computer" speakers. They have a bunch of different setups depending on your price range. There's also self-powered studio monitors you can get which generally work well for near field.
If you go the T-Amp/bookshelf route, the Topping TP20 amp previously...
Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater was the best playback software until development ceased. Cyberlink is better than WInDVD, but they are both bloated messes. There aren't really any native playback options outside of that. PowerDVD 7 was bearable when it was around, but that was several versions ago...
