Windows 10 Users Seeing Full-Screen Ads As Screen Savers

Many are always claiming how choice is wonderful. Yeah, only to the point one likes the choices. I use Windows 10 everyday, it's on all of my x86 devices. I notice the lock screen and was barely aware of this option because I'd never seen this before. But I like the idea of getting these types of ads, as designed now, because it might make me aware of something I might be interested in since I use this stuff constantly. If there were no way to turn it off, yes, that would be a problem. And one can argue about the this defaulting on for Home users. But it's an option that some may like and find useful. How can it be wrong when it's an option?

I like it like that. :D

Seriously, though - a lot of end users won't know how to turn it off and it won't be to the point where they'll look it up. They may not like it, but they'll deal with it because they feel they have no other option.

Wait? They pay me? Since when? WTH! Where's my check! ;) :D

It's not so much a payment. It's a "If you don't do it, we'll send Clippy". They really stick to their promises, too.

The only people that care about this stuff are techies and they are the ones complaining. Of course the 38 year old soccer mom isnt going to give a shit when her new windows 10 machine shows her ads because she wont know any better. These are the same types of people that click on the popups that say your computer is infect click here to repair. M$ is catering to the lowest common denominator which is the brainless user that buys something without even researching it (or upgrading to win 10 for free because it was pretty much forced on them) People that are ok with microsoft sending them ads, spying on them, advertising for their retarded store are par of the problem. Its only going to get worse, its like having commercials come loaded onto your OS. You are also probably the type of person that doesnt use some sort of adblock software because you think its unethical.

Low common denominator = Largest number of users. For the highest common denominator there are desktop Linux distros that highest common denominator types are perfectly free to use. Until they complain about lack of software. Again, people are describing some sort of ad filled experience with 10. Maybe it's coming but it's not here yet. As for ad blocking, well if everyone blocked ads on everything I'm thinking Kyle and the staff here wouldn't like that too much.

Even people that complain about ads to benefit from them, even if they block them if they use ad supported content and applications. People get a little too full of themselves about ads online considering just how central they are to revenue for the things we all enjoy.

Look at Hulu. A paid service with commercials. People complained enough that they have a version that you can pay more to not have commercials.

Ads are fine on free content. On a paid OS (even with free upgrade, you paid for a license at one time) it's less fine.

You can't have it both ways. You keep telling us regular everyday users can't be bothered with controls about telemetry and you claim there's easy controls for these same everyday regular users to shut the ads off. Well, clearly, your saying that we can turn it off if everyday regular users wish to do so. Would have been a nice option for telemetry too. But, hey, we're just stupid users. Your hypocrisy is full on.

Beyond all that, if you are looking at MS lock ads to get you turned on to buying something then why the hell aren't you at the Redmond campus every day like Pat at a Toyota dealership? You've got bigger problems. There's not one reason to put ads in a base OS period. You're still wrong, please go kiss the stairs in Redmond.

Funny vid!

People that care will probably be able to figure it out. Actually this one of the things that I find interesting in all of this. Some get so caught up in this or that they haven't bothered to even try stuff. If I say "Hey Cortana, Windows 10 lockscreen ads" boom, there's the answer. One phrase, one click. Sometimes this stuff is so easy it gets complicated by thinking it.

I agree, I sub to Hulu and pay for the ad free version. You don't have to pay to turn off this in 10 though.

whitelist, i whitelist sites i care about, youtube and etc i do not care about. But small forums like this i will gladly whitelist.

Not a lot of people use Cortana. I find if you get to using the feature and learn a bit about it, Cortana works amazing. I love that it's in there. :) It's not hard, but if you read Microsoft Answers posts, people have some very simple questions. Some that are extremely easy and if you Google their question, the answer is in post 1. They take more time to log into Answers and post the question than it would take to put it in Google (or Cortana).

Yes, but the point was that people were complaining big time about commercials in a paid service. It's not much different than cable, though. You're paying for the delivery, not the content. Content is usually from someone else...

I love the fact that those who hate Microsoft the most here are also totally unaware that Microsoft keeps making billions in profits anyways. :D I guess most of it may be motivated by jealousy?

Good thing they did not do that then so you can go right living without worry now. :D Strange, I do not see ads, popups or spying on my computer.

Locks screen are not screen savers Steve.

Enjoy your advertisements.

W7 for the win.

Oh look, more FUD. Does Gordon Kelly work here?

No ads on any Windows 10 systems here.

if they happen to be using “Windows Spotlight”

Oh. Imagine that. Use a service that serves you content, expect content.

Enjoy your advertisements.

LOL! Because like everyday we're seeing ads in Windows. At some level, call me a shill or whatever, some of these comments are just insane. "Look, a link to app in the store! OMG! It's totally like disturbing the space time continuum. Better turn it off. Oh, wait, no, that was a reflection. Never mind." I get that people don't like the idea but it's just not even anything remotely like what some are describing. And it's completely optional. Nerd rage over something that's completely optional, that takes seconds to turn off. That most people wouldn't even notice.

Well you get your opinion and we get ours. Atleast just make the OS free. If they get ads then I get it free. Otherwise you will get complaining. I don't pay for an OS so someone can capitalize on my data. Then again if I want to play my games library I'm stuck on Windoze. First good emulator, bye bye Windoze.

I also don't like paying for cable and then having to watch commercials and large advertisements taking 40% of the screen while I'm trying to watch my show and I make sure each time I talk with my tv provider they understand this. Yes I have a DVR and if only it could take out adverts from live tv and annoying popups that ruin the show. Maybe at some point someone will listen and change it, until then they will have to take time recording my complaint, maybe at some point someone will read it and people in charge will start to make a difference and actually listen to us, not some fake "listen to the problems and do nothing" the world is stuck in.

No adds on my lock screen... it shows pretty pictures of waterfalls, pianos, cities... etc: all seemingly DL'd from the interwebs, but no ads. it has a 'like what you see?' button, which is rather arousing.

Why, yes, windows. I DO like what I see....

Win 10 Pro.

It's not so much that it's in your face. It's more of the principle of it. Remember in game advertising? It didn't affect anyone one bit. Didn't cause any harm. But, the game developers were called sell outs and gamers didn't want ads in their games.

And people who spell Microsoft with a dollar sign.

LOL! Pretty much.

And as I've said, I get that and understand that. I don't understand people who don't even use 10 telling me, someone who uses it on all their personal x86 devices, I'm being buried in ads I don't see or notice or might find useful and that can easily be switched off.

Respectfully, the problem may not be now, but in future versions they slowly creep like everything else in the world with a "boiling frog doesn't know he's cooking" way. There will only be more and more intrusive ads. I understand you don't mind it, others do, and I have several copies of 10 that I upgraded from 8, so it was somewhat free in that I get a new OS and more years of support.

I would rather have no ads and no tracking, although I don't make the rules, I just follow 'em. I won't buy a copy of 10 unless I absolutely have to. MS knows basically we all have no alternative. Maybe they will give 10 away later, I'll have to take them up on it even if I don't like the ads. Yes Linux is quite swell, but lacks in game support.

But the boiling from in this case has the option to turn off the burner. The option to turn this off is why I don't see it as a problem. The fact that it is even there is why others see it as a problem.

I won't buy a copy of 10 unless I absolutely have to.

Which doesn't make you any different from the "lowest common denominator". They'll never buy copies of Windows 10 as well.

People that don't use Windows 10 and complaining, I get it.

I know you remember when there were "ad's" as part of Windows 8 tiles. Or the auto installed Candy Crush on Windows 10... People hate that. And they'll voice their opinions.

I'd buy Windows 10 if I had to. It's a great OS.

Ads on a free version, or even unactivated versions/non-genuine versions, would be fine. It's the price you pay.

What you'll notice if you've been following this Windows 10 debacle since the beginning is whatever the astroturfers were spitting "tinfoil" out of their mouths about 6 months ago, is what Microsoft is implementing and sending down via forced updates today. These guys keep moving the goalposts like their MSFT stock depends on it.

There was a time these clowns completely dismissed that microsoft would ever resort to things like trojan nagware or ads or data collection; or it was "just in the insider preview and will be gone by retail". Yarite. Next thing you know, its happening.

Windows 10 is a big, devolving, shit sandwich and we're all supposed to take a bite.

Not at all. If you don't like it, use something else. It's that if one isn't using it then why are those people spending so much energy bashing it. I use it. On a dozen machines. And there is no alternative OS for the hardware and software I use on those devices. There's not a single OS currently that can power everything from an 8" tablet to a 3 screen desktop that plays 3D movies, run Microsoft Office, Libre Office, the latest and greatest PC games, runs on the latest and great PC, etc. Even 7 can't do all of these things. 8.1, that's quickly getting deprecated if one is using 2 in 1 hardware and Windows Store apps.

All a Windows 10 hater has to do is name one OS, free or at cost, that does what 10 does and that's what I'd use right now. It's that simple. But instead all of this nonsense from people that don't even use 10. That's fine that one doesn't. But there's really no options being provided except Linux versions that have their own problems. And Apple has sword never to do true 2 in 1 hardware, until they do in the next few years.

It's all kind of silly as long as Windows is dominate in the desktop space and everything else doesn't come close to the level of topline hardware and software support that 10 does. I don't give a shit about 10. I care about all the hardware and software support that it has.

Please post a pic of yourself, I want to see how brown your nose is.

I don't mind win 10. I used to run misc builds of linux back when I had the time to spend on it and it was more hobby level then. Now I just like to click something and it works. So far running good on 10, have been since think september or august of 2014. I think my only big complaint is really I miss when troubleshoot network connection actually reset the adapter, now it is one more step (i have frequent network issues and have since 7 when dealing with vpn crap from work).

I've pumped ten times that amount into my Steam account, SteamOS shows me ads.

Why isn't anyone complaining about that?

Don't play retarded. SteamOS is a free Debian distro. Steam is a free application that provides a storefront for games and a game library, you can have it default to either screen. If Microsoft wants to have their own store with it's own ads, fine, but now they're sneaking ads out of Metro and into the previously ad-free desktop.

Surprise to see some people are actually defending having ads in an operating system.

Stupid thing to say to a black guy.

:D Rekt, as my wife would say.

I've circled one problem for you.

Windows_10.jpg

I think that's why ads are not welcome in Windows. Granted, I don't think they are in the Pro version at all (need to confirm that), but if there is a price involved then ads shouldn't be there. You shouldn't have to pay twice, IMO.

I've pumped ten times that amount into my Steam account, SteamOS shows me ads.

Steam is more than a launcher. Steam is also a store front, where you expect to see ads. Steam was brought up before, but it is far from the same. I'd expect ads in the Windows Store, Apple Store, Google Play - not in the base OS itself of any of those. To me, it's just Microsoft overstepping some grounds. There is no usability impact, there is no performance issues, the ads are small so there is so little bandwidth usage it's not an issue. It's an issue of principle. That's all I'm getting from it. People don't want ads in their bought & paid for, legally licensed OS. Even if it's able to be turned off. Suggested Apps was pissing people off and they could turn it off as well. Office 365 ads. Upgrade to Windows 10 ads (that was a biggie and MSFT didn't learn much from it). People don't want ads in their OS. Period. Every time it happens, we get long threads, articles, posts, people bitching everywhere. It's not acceptable and the consumers of the product are speaking out. I feel there is a legit concern that Microsoft should look at and really turn down the marketing within the OS.

What ads? Sorry but, I have not seen any ads.

Must not exist, then. I mean if you never see them.... You just gotta have faith. With your user name, I'm sure you understand that things can exist without you ever seeing them. They are there. I had zero issues with Windows Vista. Must not have been any problems with it then....

Home versions only, apparently.

I've only seen it once, where the lockscreen was a image of Laura Croft notifying that you could buy the game from the app store. It didn't really bother me. The system is pro. I may have searched for it before in the store after I read a story about it which triggered it. You wouldn't have even noticed it was an ad if you didn't mouse over sections on it similar to Bing.

lol.... maybe you should post your picture as your avatar.... cause after all how are we supposed to know what color you are?

Not a big deal, it's just that am a very brown skinned individual. My nose is naturally brown and has been for almost 48 years. It's the same kind of stupid that comes across when some claim that I and others are getting paid. That's why it's best to leave personal details out of anonymous conversations. Cause we really don't know much about each other by design.
