The whole idea behind clock speed is to give the consumer a benchmark in which to determine how fast a chip actually is. Today with all of the creative marketing and proprietary tweaking taking place, it’s hard to know exactly what you are getting.
In this simpler time there was no question what you’d receive when you bought a CPU. A 1GHz chip ran at 1GHz, end of story.
