Xbox One has been sucking all of the PR air out of the room this week, so let us not forget to mention the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade will be returning on August 7th. The rollouts have always been popular with the gaming audience and this year is shaping up to be more of the same.

We just got the Xbox 360 less than a year ago and it's the first time I've heard of this Summer of Arcade. What is it about and how does it work? It seems Xbox's Summer of Arcade website is messed up, I was greeted with a "Page not found" message

All I know so far is they are releasing 4 games within a week of each other.

Just a glorified release of games which may or may not be at reasonable prices.

Save your money for the Steam Summer Wallet Assassination or a PS4, or maybe some PS+ for your PS3. The free games include Uncharted 3, the newest XCOM, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Little Big Planet Karting, all of which are awesome.

Furthermore, the new Tekken game jsut dropped, and it's 100% free. Before you whine about free-to-play being pay-to-win, though, let me stop you right there. There's no way to put money into it. You can't buy shit with real-world funds. Everything in the game has to be earned. Aside from that, it's Tekken. Plays the same as the Tekken from 1995, except maybe a little bit more responsive.

Have I mentioned how letting your Xbox Live Gold subscription lapse turns your Xbox 360 into a doorstop?

Looking forward to play the new version of Flashback, but I will ignore this timed 360 exclusive and wait for the PS3 release, and then probably the Steam release too.

By your logic, letting your PSN+ subscription lapse on the upcoming PS4 will turn it into a doorstop too (well, OK - you'll still be able to use Netflix, but you won't be able to play multiplayer games).

I get all the hate on the Xbox One...I don't share in it but I get it (and I figure Microsoft will change their policies if the PS4 trounces them at the outset). But the Xbox 360 is still pretty kick-ass (while the PS3 implementation of PSN will continue to be utter crap apart from the PSN+ bonuses) with a whole lot of games. And maintaining one's Gold subscription at least through January 2014 will net each user 12 free games to boot.

In short, keep the next-gen hate where it belongs.

So one p2p network (with ads) is better than another p2p network which is magically "utter crap"? Interesting. Do you like Origin?

What I like is a system where, for example, a headset that works with the console works with every game. What I like even more is a system where I can communicate with friends who are playing other games. Something that really tickles me is when I can insert a game disc and not then spend over an hour (or, in the case of DCUO when a friend I bought that, 6+ hours) installing and updating it before playing. It's also nice when the interface is easy to understand and games run correctly on a widescreen monitor (something several "classic" games sold through Sony's store failed to accomplish).

Even if all that was fixed, the incredibly slow transfer speeds on PSN would be enough for me to call it "utter crap" and there ain't a thing "magical" about it.

The bottom line in terms of communication difficulty/lack of social features is that Microsoft kept improving their service while Sony shrugged and, in essence, told customers "Hey, it's free, whaddaya want?"

I've owned both consoles and PSN simply hasn't been anywhere close to Xbox Live in terms of overall quality. Again, I acknowledge that this is likely going to change on the PS4 (from what Sony has said); I don't think, however, that they'll ever have the kind of ongoing upgrades that MS has provided for Xbox Live. What you see at the launch of the PS4 is likely to be what you get for years...or even less given Sony's history of removing features as time goes on.

Boo how. Microsoft brought this on themselves. They thought they'd try testing the waters to see how much they could get away with just like the Metro stunt they tried pulling with Windows8. Turning everyone off to the XBONE in spectacular arrogance is bound to have a blowback effect on the 360. And that's speaking as a 360 owner.

There is a business marketing 101 and MS failed with all their latest products and attempts at customer lockin

Even worse, all those "free" PSN+ Games stop working, as they are really only rentals for the period you keep paying your protection money.

The free games and gold deal purchases stick around if you stop paying for Xbox Live.

Wrong. Happy Wars, a F2P XBL game must have Gold to play. I really hope you're not comparing games like XCOM, Borderlands, Spec Ops, Infamous, Deus Ex to the free Doritos game?

More like Fable 3, Halo3, Assassins Creed 2, and whatever else they release free to gold in the coming months. And the Steam like sales to Gold members for games like Alan Wake.

It seems it is you making the comparison, since the licensing is the same for the sponsored free Doritos game and what you get with PSN+.

On PSN+ the paywall is the rule, on Live it is the exception.

I think you have that backwards but whatever.

Oh and thanks for the laugh "Steam like sales." I"ve been on XBL for 10 yrs and never seen anything Steam like. PS+ yes but not XBL.

Then you haven't been paying attention.
