Gearbox President Randy Pitchford has taken to Twitter to let the masses know that there is a "100% chance" for a level cap increase this year.

I'll say: 100% chance of a level cap increase this year, but 50\50 on unforeseen consequences that some people will rage about.

I'll say: 10% chance this brings any significant playerbase back to the game.

Translation:

100% chance the level cap in Boarderlands 2 will increase.

50% chance that something unforseen, that will be seen an unpopular.

100% chance that people will bitch about it, on the forums.

Sometimes... no, let me rephrase.. ALL the time, I really hate people.

There better be a 100% chance of it being included into the Season Pass DLC.... finishing up Hammerlock right now...

I've already stopped playing the game. They did the same exact thing to Borderlands 1, waited way too damn long to increase the level cap which caused me to lose interest. Already beat the entire game 10x over, so I'm good. I'm pretty sure they do this on purpose, people lose interest, they bring out there next game, instant purchase by the masses.

I'm still 100% sure no one really cares. The game he's talking about is pretty much nothing anyone outside of [H] even mentions. Of all the forums I go to, this is the only one that even knows the game exists, much less cares about it.

Borderlands 2? Didn't it sell like 6 million copies?

Costs a lot less to develop too so the per unit profit is higher. Farmville was probably the same way with development budget versus income compared to Gearbox.

What does that have to do with how many people bought it? 6MM is a good sales number for a noncasual video game

I dunno, you mentioned the price so I just kinda went with it.

6 million might be okay if you have a small market, but in a bigger view of the world, Angry Birds is known by all and Borderlands is known pretty much just in this forum. The game is obscure, that's all. It's not even something that anyone rational can argue about. Teeny sales numbers, small unknown game developer, limited platforms, same old boring shooter idea...it's just another uninteresting game.

Why would someone troll this forum? I don't care if you think a video game I never played is unpopular. Are you off your meds?

I was just explaining to you why I made my original post and I even have facts to back it up. How come anytime someone makes a perfectly reasonable point, people start accusing them of being a troll? :( That sorta thing devalues the intellectual weight of this forum and dilutes our ability to share our thoughts with each other in an open, mutually beneficial manner.

Didnt he say that increasing the level could cause game crashes, or some kind of hardware issues prevented them from doing it?

I'm not sure how you think that Borderlands 2 is obscure. Seems to have a fairly large fanbase. 6mil copies sold isn't joke when it comes down to a FPS w/ RPG elements.

I'm saying it's pretty much totally unknown outside of a small circle of gaming types. Go walking around randomly with an Angry Birds shirt on and ask people if they know what the shirt is about. Then buy a Borderlands tee and do the same thing. I bet lots more people will pick out Angry Birds over Borderlands.

...buh...wuh...wait. What the hell is the point of a level cap increase if you don't get any more skill points?

I agree.

I found the original article.

We designed the skills really well this time, but we did, for better or for worse, make a lot of the decisions with the knowledge that there will be no more skill points available to put into any trees after you reach level 50. We knew the impossible configurations. Some of the design exploits that. Some of the impossible configurations, if they were possible, would break the game. Sometimes very literally. “Oh, that’s gonna blow memory. Your Xbox will crash.”

That may or may not be true. I've worn Portal & BioShock shirts with equal reaction from people. I don't think that casual vs. core gaming have comparitive player bases. Casual will always have a ton of people playing them since even "non-gamers" play them. What are we arguing about again?

I mean if you want to get nitty and gritty there was more money spent by people buying 6 million copies of borderlands than 100 million copies of angry birds. To the tune of 260 million more bucks, not including dlc. Not to mention the target market is much smaller for pc's and consoles than cell phones. How many more cell phones and tablets are in the wild compared to current gaming machines? It's not just about units sold it's about percentages. Borderlands 1 and 2 have both done very well and aren't as obscure as you make them out to be.

Also to do with target markets. The market for angry birds is simply bigger and more accessible to sell to than full games. That's like saying walk around with a shirt from a paintball team compared to an nfl team. Just because more people will recognize the nfl shirt doesn't mean the paintball team is doing badly or is even unpopular compared to the market it resides in.

We're not arguing...at least, I don't think we are. I do think it's beyond debatable that people will recognize Angry Birds and the BioShock + Portal think would probably be more similar to recognizing Borderlands in numbers since those appeal to a similar audience.

I bet it also costs more to develop something like Borderlands and advertising is probably more expensive too. The percentage of investment versus profit is probably a lot lower with it over Angry Birds which was, I'm pretty sure, cheaper to develop.

I'm not saying its doing bad. It's just basically unknown outside of a small circle of people who play those sorts of games. Really, if Gearbox wanted to be more well-known, they'd try to compete in the same league as Angry Birds or Farmville, but I think they're probably just not in a position to come up with ideas that are as successful or leverage similar talent in game design even if they had it on hand.

so to have the level cap increase , you'll have to have bought all dlc, all skins and heads and the newer not announced dlc that will be 60$ out of the gate.

Nothing to rage bout here....

Or you bought the season pass so you don't have to worry about the price of DLC.

When referring to percentages I meant the percent of people who bought borderlands who own a gaming machine compared to the percent of people who bought angry birds to the amount of people who own a smartphone or tablet. Yes borderlands cost more to make and advertise, but they grasped a good percentage of the people who own gaming devices. Angry birds on the other hand, while immensely popular really didn't sell to as large of a percent of people that borderlands did compared to the amount of people who own devices capable of playing those games. Plus borderlands is more of a game played for enjoyment and immersion while angry birds is just a time sink. Both did well, but you can't accurately compare them to each other because they are so vastly different. It's like trying to compare the sales of playing cards to the sales of wow subscriptions. It just doesn't work.

I think you vastly underestimate the amount of people that know of borderlands and other games. People know of them, they may not be interested or know much but it is far from unknown outside of "gaming circles" What do you mean the same league as angry birds or farmville? Angry birds and farmville are like facebook, just fads for wasting time soon to be forgotten when the next thing comes up. Gearbox is in the videogame industry, not the how many copies can we sell before this POS timesink hits rock bottom. The same thing that happened with myspace games will happen to angry birds and farmville while gearbox is probably still chugging along, just watch.

I guess everyone on this forum bought 34 copies?

Borderlands was a cash cow with half developed content. Borderlands 2 sounds like it was even more so. Gearbox is excellent at releasing half-assed content.

Been using my level cap time to farm and level up other characters. If you go offline on Steam and run two instances of Borderlands 2 you can drop a level 50 character into your new character's game and run through the missions quickly leveling up your new character to around 30 then take it on your own. :)
