Microsoft Corp. today announced that its new PC, Microsoft Surface, is now available for purchase at all Microsoft retail, holiday and online stores in the United States and Canada. Designed to be the ultimate stage for Windows RT, Surface is unique and represents exceptional value, providing an immersive entertainment experience and a foundation for getting things done. With a starting price of US$499,* Surface will be available online in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. In China and Hong Kong, Surface will be available online at Suning.

Holding out for the Pro version.

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do. I just got the Ativ 700T because I wanted a full x86 machine but I love the Surface design.

Looks like the launch has gone well, there were lines all across the country and the Time Square event was jam packed. Microsoft makes mistakes but they do often get underestimated. I honestly would never have believed a year ago that hundreds of people would ever stand in line for a Microsoft product besides the XBox.

All the reviews I've read have said pretty much the same thing; it's a good start, but the iPad is still number one. Pro version might be interesting though. If I could get a full blown PC experience with the portability of a tablet, that would be nice. Of course it'll probably be too expensive by the time they do that.

For free food and other stuff, I'd stand in line too. How many actually walked out with a Surface?

I'll see if I can make a trip to the MS Frisco, TX store and give it a shot.

Same here.

Personally I think MS screwed up by releasing the RT first. Personally I think had they released the Pro first to get the those wanting a tablet that is an actually Windows PC and then after the buzz is hot and heavy on it release the RT for those who want to get in on the MS tablet but don't need a full fledged tablet PC.

We actually looked at the Surface Pro for our hospital. It looks like I get to put in an order for a few to test them out. Cant wait.

The problem is that the Pro version is probably going to run around $1200, hard to get people to come out for that. It's not like there aren't some good x86 devices out there, just a matter of getting some in stock now.

Yeah I understand that, although i think a large number of people will jump onboard, even at that price, and then probably many others would want to but the price would stop them and then when MS offer the lower cost gimped RT many who wouldn't get the Pro due to price would snatch it up.

We'll never know, but it just seemed like a better method to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of these ultrabook class hybrid devices, I think they are the best form factor to get the most out of Windows because they can literally function as a laptop, desktop and tablet all in one device. But they are a lot more expensive than ARM tablets, a bit heavier and thicker with fans, and only have the battery life and those are things that most tablet buyers are obsessed with. Hopefully Windows 8 will cultivate an appetite for these much more versatile Core tablets, Intel definitely seems to pushing them pretty hard since they make better margins on these kinds of devices that the SoC Atoms.

I don't expect the Surface Pro will be $1,200 anyway.

More or less than that? Around $1200 seems to be the sweet spot for these Core hybrid devices, I would expect Microsoft's pricing to be in line with it's OEMs on the Pro like they are the RT.
