WD, a Western Digital company, and a leader in the mobile, desktop, high-capacity enterprise and consumer markets for hard drives today announced it is further expanding its enterprise-class storage offerings with the release of new WD RE SAS and WD RE SATA hard drives in capacities up to 4 TB, the largest on the market today. Available immediately in 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB capacities for nearline SAS and 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB for SATA, the 3.5-inch WD RE SAS and WD RE SATA hard drives offer the powerful combination of enterprise-class features and superior capacity to meet the growing demands of conventional business-critical environments as well as the high-capacity and performance requirements of cloud and scale-out computing.

Nice! Being enterprise class drives they'll have long warranties and long life spans (hopefully).

Western Digital may not have much competition, but it's nice to see them making new stuff. I like the interface standard too because it makes my storage solutions SASsy. =^..^=

Nice! Price is better than I thought it would be too. One day, just one day... :)

Nice.

These would let me double the storge in some of the office servers that are currently maxed out using 2TB drives :)

That's really nice. Our company doesn't buy direct but it will be interesting to see if other vendors follow along.

seagate can already make 6tb hdd at 2010 and they said their new tech can make up to like 60tb hdd. they just wont release it that way they can price fix the market more.

Cool! Hopefully by bringing on the 7200 RPM RE drives this means that we'll be seeing >2TB Caviar Black drives soon (and perhaps a drop in price of existing drives).

AWESOME. Seriously, I've been maxing out the 2TB drives I've been using, and 3 just didn't appeal.

This is great!

I've owned 6 of the RE drives over the years simply because of their reliability reputation. I originally bought 3 x 1TB RE3 drives back in 2007 and they worked great for 5 years up to the day they were replaced with RE4 2TB drives.

Maybe...but they will be expensive.

BTW: I have a few hundred SAS drives in servers here, they arent worth a shit for lifespan/reliability. I probably have replaced them at about 4 times the rate as I have to replace the older SCSI drives. Probably because they are all 2.5" form factor and run 24x7...not enough surface area to cool off as well as the larger drive form factor.

Another thing on form factor...there are currently no servers with 3.5" SAS hot swap backplanes. They are all designed for 2.5" drives.

I guess these will initially be targeting the 'fringe' consumer market power users who would be the only ones likely to be able to use them, since it will take a while for manufacturers to ramp up for production of server chasis/backplanes supportting 3.5" SAS.

Since when? The HP ML110 G7 has 3.5" hot swap SAS drives.

NoTouch™ ramp load technology: Recording heads never touch the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to recording heads and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Where do I sign up?

I stand corrected.

None of the HP servers we have use 3.5" SAS, they either have 2.5" SAS or 3.5" SCSI. Maybe we need to get to G7 models, and we are so big it takes two years to get new models. Most of what we have and can order are DL380 G6 and DL580 G6 with the standard small form factor drive cages. (It's new to me but I do also see where the large form factor SAS drive cages are optional as well for the G6 but not from our supplier).

Cool...

Dell Poweredge 2900/2950 also use the 3.5 SATA/SAS. Just FYI
