Hello HF,

How would you set these 3 things up on a win7 rig for best sound output whether analog or digital.

Thanks guys

optical to onkyo. although you should just return the sound card, since your Onkyo is going to process all your sound anyways, and is essentially doing what your sound card is. (just saying you are literally wasting 200 bucks)

What is best/cheapest for you depends on what you want to do.

For SPDIF:
If its stereo output to your receiver exclusively, then the only difference in SPDIF sound cards is how good the clock signals are. The ZxR is likely overkill and unnecessary.

If its surround sound over one spdif cable from playback sources that are not pre-encoded in a compatible format that can be bitstreamed, make sure your sound card supports some encoding like Dolby digital live. The ZxR supports this. Most CMI8788 cards with corerct drivers will too.

For HDMI:
HDMI supports far more in terms of audio, including uncompressed surround transmission. If all the capabilities for surround output are shared by both your card and receiver, then you should be good to go for most things.

For old games:
If you are gaming with older games that use OpenAl or directSound3d, Then sound card capabilities very much matter. Most creative cards should support both in some form. CMI8788 based sound cards should also support this fully with UNi Xonar drivers.

To clarify then ,

HDMI is the best overall for music or movies , regardless of whether or not the correct codecs are used ,

ZXR is only better in some games that support EAX or creative software etc.... ?

correct ?

I can do HDMI from my 290x -> AVR , would that be the best option in your opinion ?

....If you want proper sound/surround sound. Its sort of a corner case that can sometimes give out all kinds of headaches in windows vista and up.

290x -> AVR is the cheapest and should be the most compatible excepting old games.

Many features of your sound card are going to be rendered redundant by your receiver, too, so its even less valuable to have one. And if you do HDMI audio without a discreet sound card, you can always install a sound card later if it doesn't work out.
