In my haste of building my parents a new PC. I built a simple Haswell i5 using the Z97 chipset, and now after setting it up there is no way to drive their Dell U2713HM @ 2560x1440:

The Z97 motherboard has:
1 x DVI-D port, supporting a maximum resolution of 1920x1200@60Hz
1 x HDMI port, supporting a maximum resolution of 4096x2160@24Hz or 2560x1600@60Hz
* Support for HDMI 1.4a version.

The Dell U27HM13 has:
1 Dual Link Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
1 DisplayPort 1.2 (DP)
1 High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
Our HDMI is 1.4 is compatible and can support up to 1920 x 1080.

So the HDMI on the Dell does not handle 2560x1440. They make DP to HDMI adapters for $30. Does anyone know if I can use a DP to HDMI adapter backwards, so that it's HDMI to DP? Does direction matter on these adapters?

The descriptions are all "Easily Connects Your DisplayPort PC to an HDMI Enabled HDTV, Monitor or Projector". However I need to use it the other direction. To connect HDMI from my PC to DP on my Monitor.

If anyone has any experience in this matter it would be great.

If the adapter does work, for $30 + $10 for an HDMI cable. Would it be better just to buy a ~ $50-$100 video card and not use the integrated intel graphics?

DP->HDMI adapters are uni-directional, you can't convert an HDMI to a DP signal with that particular adapter.

You need something like this: http://ca.startech.com/ppc?product_...CNo7Rs6fVZhBnIP9lRqH2lrEizwNYHjPriBoCPlHw_wcB but it isn't even compatible with your full resolution.

Get a video card with DisplayPort or DL-DVI.

Almost certainly you can't use the DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter backwards. There exist HDMI-to-DP adapters, but the ones I've seen are active and they're expensive.

I think your best bet would be a new motherboard with one or more DisplayPort outputs. (Assuming you can return the old motherboard. If not, then a cheap video card with DisplayPort or Dual Link DVI outputs--but that'll draw more power than the integrated graphics.)

Thanks for the response. I'm still shocked Dell would provide HDMI that only does 1080p on a 2560x1440 monitor. Looks like i'll either swap out the motherboard, or put in a < $100 graphics card.

That is kinda strange for the Dell. Have you tried a different HDMI cable?
I have an older AMD HD6950 and bought a 25" 2560x1080 monitor and it worked with the monitor supplied HDMI cable.

Oh, I just found the specs for the monitor. you have the model number transposed so I couldn't find it right away.
that is odd that it's only 1920x1080 on that screen.

If the DVI-D on both the motherboard and monitor are dual-link, you can do 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz over DVI. Just make sure to use a DL-DVI cable, as well.

There are a lot of laptop users trying to push HDMI out to the U2713HM at 2560x1440 using registry hacks and setting custom timings. It appears there is no problems if you hack it at 55hz. I've seen other posts about going from HDMI to DVI and creating custom timings. I'm not interested in these hacks for my parents as i don't want to get a phone call from them about why it stopped working.
