In a webcast, SpaceX announced that Yusaku Maezawa will be the first human to leave the Earth's orbit in decades, if everything goes according to plan. Elon Musk intends to send the billionaire Japanese art curator, along with several of his friends, around the moon and back using SpaceX's BFR. Current renderings suggest the Big Falcon Rocket will tower 387 feet above the ground and is capable of throwing 220,000lb into orbit, surpassing the Saturn V as the biggest launch vehicle ever. The launch window is sometime in 2023, though even Musk admits that could change.

Only 24 humans have been to the Moon in history. No one has visited since the last Apollo mission in 1972.

Surely they'll send up unmanned LEO, followed by unmanned LTO missions before allowing human flight...

220,000lb, huh?

Yusaku Maezawa and his friends must be really large sumo wrestlers :p

of course they will, they will have to. and i also highly suspect they will not be the first to leave earth orbit, but another crew of skilled people will do that first to test things out.

I would expect at least one unmanned BFR before the lunar flight. NASA did 2 for the Saturn V before Apollo 8. Even Musk stated a 50% fail chance for the Falcon Heavy and that was basically flight proven parts in a new configuration. Lot more new stuff on the BFR.

Maybe a Blue Tesla 3 setup as a lunar rover for one of the test flights? It is already electric and wouldn't need much additional hardware for remote control. Probably need different wheels. And a soft touchdown craft.

Oh, that's brilliant. Give it a large rooftop solar aray and the right tires and suspension. Maybe a Model-X.

Live stream the cam back from the moon on Youtube.
