Youtube won't let me access my account?

I went to youtube and got this message

Please enter your YouTube account password to verify you own this account

so I logged out and tried logging back in but it won't let me I get this message

Update your YouTube account by linking to a Google Account

You will no longer be able to sign in to YouTube without a Google Account

.

Is there anyway around this? I don't want a Gmail account, I'm a bit surprised they would force this.

I think you're off topic here. Also, a Google Account is different than a gmail account.
