I’ll give YouTube my money if they manage to release original content on par with Netflix or Amazon, but my hunch is that it’ll just be the usual from “YouTube Stars.”

The world’s biggest video site is readying a slate of programming that will only be available to people who join its upcoming subscription services. YouTube will announce some of that programming, which it is helping to fund, at an event at its studio/event space in Los Angeles next Wednesday, October 21.

This has been a long time coming, not so sure how well this going to work as it seems to go against the whole point of YouTube.

No sane adult will pay for this.

They are probably counting on teeny-boppers to nag their parents into giving them Google wallet money so they can watch "premium" YouTube content.

I have a sevn year old stepson. If he ever nags me for YouTube money, I'll just log on to the ole firewall and block YouTube all together :p

Well i would not put it past ALOT of people to pay for this, just as people said no one would pay for DLC for games... now it is every where.

You will get people to pay, but question is how many. And how much content will they restrict to paying customers eventually..

I think this may work for certain kind of videos such as those popular Minecraft machinima, where their contents are like a TV series. Fans may be willing to pay to see new episodes first.

But I don't see it becoming a main feature of youtube. It's not going to work for the typical youtube stuff.

article said:
YouTube will continue to operate a free, ad-supported version of the site, and has said that all of the videos that appear on the free site will be available on its paid version — which is why YouTube is insisting that all video-makers who make money from YouTube ads need to participate in the subscription service as well.
...
In April, YouTube announced some of the new content it was helping to fund, including a series from Smosh stars Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla and movies from DreamWorks Animation’s AwesomenessTV.
Looks like Google is going heavy with the stick to get ad revenue making content makers to appreciate how much they would want a couple more carrots.

So if you pay for this do the ads still play or is the content ad free?

One would hope the ad's would go good bye.. but knowing how companies love to screw you at every corner i would not doubt them still keeping some ads..

Paying for streaming media? What arrogant jerks. They are going to go down in flames just like Netflix - no one can refuse to give ME free stuff!

I'd treat it as an opportunity to enhance the child's critical thinking skills.

So, after reading this part of the article:

"YouTube will continue to operate a free, ad-supported version of the site, and has said that all of the videos that appear on the free site will be available on its paid version — which is why YouTube is insisting that all video-makers who make money from YouTube ads need to participate in the subscription service as well."

That means the guys that I watch that operate off Ad revenue, if they get convinced to be part of the paid subscription, I won't be able to watch for free anymore? Most of these content providers started putting out videos without even the intent of making money.

If how I think I read this is true, fuck YouTube. I'll go find some other forms of video entertainment.

I'm betting it will work.

There are PLENTY of idiots who are loyal to these content creators. I wouldn't be surprised if the same idiots who subscribe to poopeepie will be the same who pay for shitty youtube content.

Not all youtube content is shit.

While I don't think I've found one that's "TV show" quality, But they also don't have the budget these tv companies have either.

Youtube stuff just isn't worth paying for. Really, it isn't. If they were talking about high quality original TV series or movies that is one thing, but a 10-15 minute video on something that you can live without is another thing entirely.

Good news is I think pretty much every thing I watch on youtube won't fall into this category.

Hopefully none of the shows I watch will require me to pay. At the same time, probably won't matter, as for some reason, some ppl download the youtube videos, then reuploads them on torrent sites. At least for some of the things I watch.

So what they said is view numbers will go down and be prepared to find a pop up saying "this video is not available to free members".

Meh I'd support it just as a FU to people who want to whine about how they deserve stuff for free.

Yes and no. I mean I watch it for free because companies pay youtube for a 30second space for advertisements I have to watch before my video. I think a pay content alternative is always a good option, many things Id rather pay a few bucks a month to not see ads. But I do think it causes many users to go elsewhere. It will be interesting to see how it goes. People used to say netflix was going to collapse with their price hikes they have done in the past, same with amazon and their price hikes. People will pay if they can see it as a good value.

I would like to see the game developers step up and work with some of the fan video makers ... the Fallout Nuka Break series was great (considering the low budget) ... I think the big developers could use a fraction of their marketing budgets and fund several good made for internet video series or movies ... some of the properties that I think could do this successfully:

Blizzard properties like Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft
Bethesda properties like Elder Scrolls and Fallout
Bioshock
Doom
Might and Magic
Deadspace (they already had animated movies for each of the games)

and there are others I am sure. For some where they use computer animations for cut scenes they could probably create full cartoons. For others there have been many excellent live action fan movies so I am sure with a little more budget they could crank out some decent stuff.
