YouTube has released a statement in response to people posting videos of themselves eating laundry detergent. In an article from FastCompany, YouTube states:

"YouTube’s Community Guidelines prohibit content that’s intended to encourage dangerous activities that have an inherent risk of physical harm. We work to quickly remove flagged videos that violate our policies."

I guess Darwin has been foiled again! The article also states that the content is being removed only after being flagged by users. In addition to YouTube and P&G, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued has issued a statement stating "A meme should not become a family tragedy. Don't eat poison."

In an earlier statement of its own, P&G said it was working with "leading social media sites" to encourage the removal of videos that violate their polices.

...or using a mixture that includes bleach for mouth wash to help with bad breath.

In our information age I guess people really are not more intelligent than previous generations - we just have more ways to see people do stupid stuff?

Of course. If people weren't doing the latest trendy dumb thing on youtube, they'd be doing some other dumb thing. Now it's just that everyone can easily film and upload it for the world to see.

Good; I'm glad they're removing them. This has nothing to do with "Darwin" or being unintelligent, and everything to do with being a teenager.

Face it, if we killed teenagers for doing stupid things, there would be no adults. :p

Face it, if we killed teenagers for being stupid no one would survive to adulthood... :p
"We"? They're killing themselves.
And what do you mean this is just part of being a teenager? Even before being a teenager i knew not to eat laundry detergent. You're saying there are people out there that don't know this? And that I should be worried about protecting them?

So now they will move on to touching hot stoves. Better make a public service message about that quick.

lots, apparently.

I think we all did a lot of dumb shit when we were teenagers, but putting laundry detergent in my mouth was never something that crossed my mind... Vodka, well, that's a different story.

"Go drink bleach" has been a meme for years ever since a 12/13 year old girl attempted suicide this way, told everyone about it, then went on to hang herself.

Even before being a teenager I knew not to smoke, use drugs, drive too fast, get drunk, have unprotected sex, play with guns, and play with fire .. among others. Yet we still try to keep children and teens from doing these things, should we stop trying to protect them from these things?

The world needs to focus on something else.

I nominate The Dog Turd Challenge!

It's easy. Go to your neighbor's yard, pick up the turd your dog left there, and film yourself eating it!

I meant only that teenagers make bad decisions, irrespective of intelligence.

I read when you put one in your mouth a chemical reaction takes place and your mouth starts to burn.

Well in all of those cases, it's things that may have a detrimental effect on the child that may not be obvious. Smoking is legal, yet children are not allowed to do it. Same with getting drunk, same with unprotected sex, same with playing with guns, same with playing with fire. As an adult, you can do all of those things.
This driving too fast thing is a bit of an oddball, it doesn't really fit on that list.
Drinking/eating detergent was never a thing that adults or children do.
You're not even protecting them from that either. You're saying "You're not allowed to post videos of you doing something really specific and stupid".
How is that protection? Clearly if they want to do it, they'll just do it.

Maybe if you want to protect them, you'd instead put a ban on anyone posting stuff on social media that's less than 18 years of age. That would actually protect the morons who are persuaded to do really dumb things through social media. However that would go against free speech and expression, which is more important than a few kids who want to eat tide, post the video on youtube and get "famous".

Why don't they crack down on the parents of said idiots. Kids don't get this dumb by accident. They are all this dumb by nature and only good parenting can show them how to make good decisions, instead of just doing whatever they FEEL like.

If it was just the detergent pod challenge this wouldn't be an issue.

Instead teenagers of the World are Wantonly sullying the clean reputation of Tide with the filthy antics.
