Your Video Card Upgrade Ladder

Some random ISA one (I was 5), Some random PCI one (I was 7), STB Velocity 4400, Geforce 3, Radeon 9600, Radeon 9600xt, Geforce 6800gt AGP

(My original PC, bought in 1992, was a 486DX@33Mhz with 4MB ram & a 170MB HDD. Cost £1500 - around $2800 at current exchange rates. Allowing for inflation that's around $4300 in today's money  )

Anyhow:

A generic VESA card
Cirrus Logic VESA
The mighty Matrox Millenium - first PCI card
Voodoo1
Voodoo2 - both with the Matrox
TNT2 Ultra - first AGP card; the MaxiGamer Xentor 32 IIRC
GF2 GTS
The marvellous GF4 Ti4400 - a Creative model
GF6 6800GT
GF7 7800GT - first PCIe card
GF8 8800GTS 640MB

I'd have to say the Ti4400 was the best buy.

Onboard Geforce 4 (Nf2 board)
9600 Pro
9600 XT
9800 Pro (flashed to XT)
X1600 (agp)
X1650 Pro (pci-e)
X1650 XT (pci-e)
X1950 Pro (pci-e) WOOT! :D

S3 Trio 64+ with a whooping 2MB of vRAM and a Pentium 166MHz oced to 200MHz<<What a POS!!!!

ATi Rage 128 PRO with a Pentium 2 400MHz oced to 500MHz<<What a piece of junk.

GeForce 4 MX420 with a Pentium 4 2.53GHz which I returned to store cause of it suckeness <<Another piece of Junk, it was barely faster than my laptop's Mobility Radeon

ATi Mobility Radeon (M6) aka 7000 with a Pentium 3 Tualatin with 512KB L2 cache @ 1.13GHz << I was able to run Legacy of Kain 2 with all the eye candy loll, a card that didn't support FSAA due to it's 16MB VRAM and lack of support for Hardware Transform and Lightning.

ATi Radeon 9700 flashed to PRO with a Pentium 4 2.4B GHz<< The first card that allowed me to see the beautifulness of DX9 in games like TRAOD, Far Cry and Half Life 2.
ATi Radeon X800XT Flashed to Platinum Edition with a Pentium 4 3.4C Northwood, 2 years later I upgraded the CPU for a Pentium 4 3.4GHz Extreme Edition << The first card with the wow factor in DX9 performance, allowed me to play with higher eye candy and FSAA in any game until 2 months ago when I replaced it with the current X1950XT

ATi Radeon X1950XT with a Pentium 4 3.4GHz Extreme Edition, two months later I took it off and put a Pentium M 780<< The first vidcard came defective, the second one didn't gave me any issues and allowed me to further increase eye candy and finally being able to use FP HDR which looks quite nice (Barely better than the one implemented in the CS engine), it was holded back by my P4 EE 3.4GHz and that's why it didn't offered a huge performance improvement, so I changed of CPU to improve the situation a bit here.
