I'm surprised so many people have mentioned ImgBurn and Nero but not UltraISO.

I really like the simplicity, small footprint of it, and how it works on every platform I've tried it on. 32-bit Win2K to 64-bit Vista/Server 2008.

I could list a ton of things, but I guess I will just name the things I go to first whenever I do an install.

On Windows:
Firefox
Winamp
AVG
WinRAR
Pidgin
FileZilla
Photoshop

On OS X
Safari, iChat, and iTunes... don't install those, but you know what I mean ;)
Cyberduck
Photoshop
Dreamweaver
Fireworks
Pages
Final Cut

These are running 24/7

Which programs you cannot do without when you are installing a fresh OS.

If these progz are your tweaking progz which you realy need to get the right feeling about

I have so many more but it's slipping my mind today, oh well thats the brunt of them.

I prefer to have my system as light as possible.
Meaning after a new installation I firstly try to get rid of the ballast, and then only install the bare necessary things.

o Vista or XP or Linux bases OS like Ubuntu

o Office 2007

o SoulSeek (ugly interface but the most intuitive sound files p2p client)

o CCleaner (clean up of all the little vomit accumulating over the time)

o Photoshop (if you can imagine it - photoshop can make it)

o Halo-Combat Evolved (I know that's not an application, but this should be default game of any OS, next to Mah Jong)
Did you know that you don't need to have the CD in the player anymore when updated to V1.08 ? YAY !

o As antivius I can recommend Kasperski Internet Security (that's all you ever need, if you need anything at all that means)

by the way ... I deleted some pictures by accident completely.
Thank to Google I found a great little program called UNDELETE PLUS.
With the help of this little application I could browse through everything I had wiped off in the past and got my pictures back this way.
Awesome little tool !!

uTorrent
AIM and Gtalk - I have dual monitors, dont really need them combined into a single prog or anything.
7zip
Combined Community Codec Pack + Media Player Classic
Magic ISO
Daemon Tools -
Foobar2000 - Better than winamp.
Opera - Best Browser evar!
Nod32 - Never had to use it, but makes me sleep better at night.

To be honest, no wonder people's machines bog down with all this "crap" running on them.

Elaborate?
If you come accross different people's IT issues, you'd find out that too much clutter is one of the most common reasons for corruption and PC's becoming unstable.

Programs are not always written clean (and to be 100% compatible with everything within the PC environment).
The more you've got running (primary or secondary), the more it is bound for complications / crashes / ect ect to happen.

I have many of the programs listed on this thread running. Knock on wood but my system runs w/o problems. What i don't like are:
photoshop cs3 - runs programs in-memory
visual studio/sql - stable but still lots of things running
adobe acrobat - gawd i don't like the loads but it is still stable.

+1 for office 2007. I've been using it for about a month and it is VERY different from older versions of office. It will take time to get used to.

I'll add to this sony soundforge, awesome program for sound editing.

Sorry, can I just add my experience with a little, powerful tool called Launchy which I have heard of the first time in this very thread.

Out of curiousity I gave it a try and oh boy, .... I am very selective of what I use but this little prg is one of the best.

It does what all programs supposed to do ... it stays in the background until you hit ALT + Space .... a little window comes up where you put in the first letter(s) of whatever you wanna lauch ... and it does exactly what it says on then tin. It starts websites as well as enables you to search for documents, soundfiles, pics .....

Sounds simple, and you might say we could use the "run" feature but I would say this is superior over the "run" feature .... you only type in one or more letters and it gives suggestions .... ----> after a few minutes practise you start applications in a FLASH !! ... and I'm not exaggerating.

No need for icons anymore ;)

10 out of 10 !!

Doesn't Vista search do the same thing? Give Vista time to index your drives and you'll be able to launch software with a couple letters.

If I type ph in Vista's search bar, Photoshop launches, for example.

Yes, Vista has such a feature already built in. However, Launchy is great for those who still use XP.
