It would seem that young people are realizing that giving up social media can actually make you happier. Not being tied to your computer or phone all day checking for updates and messages gives you more free time for stuff like video games and porn. What?!? You know you were thinking the same thing. ;)

I made a New Year resolution to cut down on my social media use. After doing this I started to ask, why am I using it at all? That’s why I’ve quit various platforms over the past year: Snapchat in November and Facebook in June. I’ve never really had WhatsApp or Twitter. I mainly used Facebook at university, for organising events and meet-ups, but I’ve gradually started to realise how pervasive is it. I also feel uncomfortable with the amount of time I used to spend on it.

I only run Twitter for my business. Not interested in anything else. Barely interested in Twitter.

Once you have self-confidence and something better to do, you think social media is a waste of time? Obvious story is obvious.

I guess I would not know because I am old. ;) Also, I only use facebook and even then, only with people I already now.

I have an 18 yr old daughter who very rarely puts her phone down. I think though now that she's in college and sees she got shit to do if she wants to succeed in this world that her phone is not as important anymore. Let's hope.:D

Pats gman's back. Brother you have it hard, 18yr old daughter in college? I've got 10 years to go till then, wipes brow...

I use social media more when I'm in Alaska, than I do while in Maryland. Lack of people and crappy weather keeps me inside more.

I have to use LinkedIn for work and my wife makes me keep a Facebook account so she can tag me in stuff and so people don't think we got divorced.

Too much social is a bad thing. The only active social platform I use is Facebook and it's just to keep in contact with family and friends across the globe. It's convenient. Yes I post a lot of food pics, but at least I'll know what I got sick from eating the night before. :D

Internet hyper-conformity needs to die, so I'm not surprised people who haven't learned to hold their internet presence in the right perspective would just want to quit it.

Never did Facebook; was on LinkedIn for 3 weeks while looking for a job, despite "deleting" my account, I still get invite emails to join [insert name here] LinkedIn network years later; quit twitter 2.5 years ago and have been MUCH better off without it. Social Media may be the biggest misnomer since Social Justice Warrior.

Careful, this type of talk lands you in Mr. Mackey's office.

The LinkedIn emails might be from people you've interacted with elsewhere. They likely requested (and got) permission to someone's contact list and now send out to it on behalf of that person.

I've never been on LinkedIn but I get emails from them as well.

Does this forum count as social media? Because reading the posts here usually makes me happy. Or is that insane? Sometimes can't tell the difference! :D

I signed up to LinkedIn when I was job hunting and quickly discovered that many of those who advertise on LinkedIn are judging you like a high school clique. You're either in with the right people/have enough contacts/have the right profile or you're not. However, if you pick up a telephone and call an HR manager they're quite happy that you're capable of doing so and it gets you much further.

In my experience it's mostly people who got on the internet in the last 8-10 years that got it wrong. For them the internet is talking to the people they already know. For me it was the exact opposite. Still is. That's why I am here with you guys.

Most people I've seen use Facebook have total strangers as 'friends'. The difference between here and Facebook is that on Facebook you get subjected to every possible stupidity in this world. Memes, chain letters, stupid posts by stupid people. Not to mention all the attempts to infect you. Facebook is for people who want to self emphasize at the expense of dwelling the cess pools of social media. In my book they're in the end just a chunky bit in the pool.

For now this board is about it for me, and I don't even pay attention to the user names, only the comments.
So I don't really even know who is team green or red.. or red or blue so on.

It really is terrifying how addicted to smart phones people are these days, it's like the crack epidemic in the 80s, except with cell phones and far worse. But it's not just young people, all age groups are affected. My old man got a smart phone several years ago and almost overnight he was addicted to it and he's 64. But the most bizarre behavior I've seen so far is an entire family of eight sitting down at Taco Cabana. They all whipped out their phones and immediately started texting. I got curious and glanced over some of their shoulders and was stunned to figure out that they were all talking to each other via text messaging.

I have several smart phones and tablets myself that people have given me after they upgraded, and I just can't find a use for them. The screens are too small and I can't stand having to use a touch screen for all user input.

It's called not constantly looking at the "seemingly" happier lives of others.
