You think you take competitive gaming seriously?

Most of these people make significantly more money than you do, just saying. Someone like Idra is making $200k a year salary, not including winnings. Some Korean players are making $600k+ in SK. You can hate on their lifestyle and say it's for losers, but at the end of the day, they love what they do, and they are payed pretty well for doing it. Most of these guys are married or have extremely good looking girlfriends, quit acting like they're somehow sub-human for playing games. These people are not social-shut ins. They're basically B-list professional athletes.

I follow professional Starcraft, it's a very intense game at that level of play. It takes the passion and talent just as much an any professional sport does. If I was that good at games, I'd do it. These houses are to build a solid training environment, makes perfect sense.

Damn, I knew they made money, but i didn't think it was in THAT kind of range

$600K? fuck man . . . .

I bet anybody in this thread would do it if offered that much money to play a flippin video game.

I don't think it's actually quite that high anymore. Last I heard dudes like Flash and Jaedong are in the $200k range for salary, and then prize winnings on top of that.

Course... it could be that high. There's a small number of them that kind of win everything so with prize money maybe they do hit $600k. I dunno.

Nobody's that high in SC2 yet for salary, as far as anybody knows anyway. Most of that kind of information is still kept private. There's some guys winning a lot of money like Nestea and MVP though. Like I said, Nestea made over $220k in the first year SC2 was out.

yeah, its a culmination of sponsorships + prize winnings + contracts. They make a shitload in the upper tier teams and players.

I'd come cheap. I'll "settle" for maybe 300k or some such. ;)

That job isn't going to sustain you for your entire life. I would say at 30 your going to be phased out of the competition. Latest 40.

Sure, but there's a progression there too. Team management, casting, event planning, etc. There's plenty of other things to do in the industry.

And dont forget that once they get too old to play as well as they used to, they may just become a manager for a new team.

That is the thing, in SC2, how old would be too old? It is not a twitch shooter that relies on lightning fast reflexes, or super keen vision. It is a strategy game. One has to be reasonably fast with the mouse, and the macros, but it is more like a chess match than a game of UT99 instagib.

The big problem here is that nobody is defining exactly what "most of these guys" means. You are mentioning 4 or 5 different people. So out of all the gamers in the US you have 4 or 5 making 200k +? Or be generous, assume it is 100 people that make that type of money. That still is virtually nothing when it comes down to the number of gamers that think they are good and can make money from it, and spend tons of money on travel.

That is no different than the throngs of people that go to LA each year to try and become movies stars, or go to NYC hoping to break into theater, or the college jocks that think they have a shot at the NFL. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You certainly are not going to earn the paychecks just pubbing from home hoping to be discovered.

GORANKAR is right, but then again, when is GORANKAR ever not right? :D

The Emperor himself can get too old...

He still plays professionally but he's nowhere near as good as he was back in the day.

Third time is the charm :D

I would rather stick a fully charged cattle prod covered with super glue and broken glass up my ass, and blast by ball sack with a tazer, while drinking Drano mixed with rat poison, while tossing myself off the tallest building I can find with a noose around my neck, than ever marry again. :D

In case I was not clear enough for you....................................[redacted]

so the hot girl is the girlfriend of the guy filming?...1 hot chick amongst 8 geeks?...she must 'prepare' them for their LAN battles pretty good

that is a nice house though...love the pool

You'd think at some point I might get used to the misogynistic bullshit that seems so endemic to gamers, but you know what... I don't think I ever will.

yup, sleeps with all them players!

Also, a lot of these guys are multi-talented. I believe one of the best professional poker players in the world is actually better at Starcraft than he is at poker. He's a multimillionaire thanks to poker, but he still finds it worth it to compete in Starcraft. Poker is also popular among a bunch of other players, they're pretty much the modern day Chess Grandmasters - their knowledge of strategy and control is far more vast than the limits of any one game.

I dunno how anyone in the thread can hate on any of these guys.....especially Geoff. LoL - live in a mansion, play games all day, and have Miss Oregon being your house mom. Seriously? What kid wouldn't want to be any of these guys.

And she gets my vote for coolest chic EVER. She is totally geeking out over the whole thing.....what a cool chic!

I agree somewhat, just saying, that SC2 is not a game one needs to be in their late teens through, late twenties or early thirties to play competitively. And also that, if the Emperor's tactics and strategies stay mostly the same, while every one else evolves, then yeah, he is not going to SEEM as good as he once was. I am more of the opinion that other players simply got better.

I am not a competitive player, but I do not foresee a time between now and death that I will not be a gamer. When I am 80, I will still be firing up a game, rather than the TV. And I wager I will still be putting the hurt on some whippersnappers.

Why do you think she have a very large bed in her room? :D

Wow, just wow. That's really all I can say.
I wouldn't mind being a professional PC gamer, but honestly, I don't ever see it happening. Can always dream, eh?

Can't watch the video as I'm at work, but holy crap.

I love video games -- but even I have my limits, after 2 or 3 days of solid gaming I feel like a worthless fat piece of shit..

This is me, years ago i could do it but now i can actually feel my life wasting away even though i love games.

Cant blame them, it will be temporary so i hope they are tucking some money back.

directv flew my BF2 team out to sanfran for a BF2 event that was shown on direct tv :)

How the hell does a pro-gamer meet and start nailing Miss Oregon? Were they together before she won?

They were both on their college debate team. And remember, he was a pro-gamer on the side. He was a competing power lifter. I'd wager that's what she saw a little more of at the start...

Where are these salary numbers coming from? $200k is WAY more than I was expecting any of these dudes to be pulling in salary, even a fairly high profile name like Idra.

no one is making 200K in salary in SC2 right now

there may be 1 player (Flash) in BW right now that makes 200K+ in salary. in the past, some of the top BW / WC3 players (when BW/WC3 popularity was peaking) made 200K+ in salary.

the highest rumored salaried player in SC2 is Huk and he described it as "life changing money." no idea how to interpret that but it's definitely not 200K because teams would be setting themselves up to fail if they were that reckless with their money.
