Yet another which 10 series card thread. This time for a 3930K @ 4.6

I am currently running two 670's in SLI, and although the performance is still acceptable in most situations, I would like to go to a single card setup as it seems that SLI support has become more an issue as time goes on. I was looking at a 1070 Zotac AMP card at my local computer shop, but they said that the card would be severely bottle-necked by my older processor, and that I would be better off to put my money towards buying a Skylake based system with a 5820 and to then upgrade my video card down the road. They said that with my slow processor I am more limited by my CPU than video card at the moment, and that I would see more of a boost in games with a CPU / motherboard upgrade than a GPU upgrade. The games I play are mainly flight sims and FPS shooters, and I also use my machine for a lot of 3D rendering work. Any suggestions on which upgrade route to go? Would I be wasting my money on a video card upgrade? Any one with a 3930K upgraded to one of the newer 10 series, and if so - what has been their experience?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Spec's are below.

Intel 3930K @ 4.6 Ghz
Asus P9X79 Deluxe Motherboard
Corsair H100 Watercooling
32 GB Corsair XMS DDR 1600
Crucial 960 GB M500 SSD
Crucial Adrenaline SSD Cachedrive
Western Digital Black 4TB 7200
Soundblaster X-Fi
Achieva Shimian 27" 2560 x1440 LCD

Unless you are running an Intel Q6600, the "bottleneck" will be so small and minute that it will not matter. You can stick one of the unreleased Titan Pascal into that machine and game all day.

GPU > CPU. Repeat after me. GPU is greater than CPU. Again. GPU means more than CPU.

I'll go find you some game charts since I know you won't believe me. :)

I just went down their website and randomly picked some benchmarks.
Тесты видеокарт и игр, обзоры , новости мира игр и IT технологий.

If you see where you will be bottlenecked and unable to game on your CPU, please show it to me. ;)

Do you notice something weird about the charts? Even the AMD FX-9590 is a viable CPU for gaming nowadays! Stop worrying about your even newer i7-3930K and get a GTX 1070 into that machine ASAP!

LMAO this is a bunch of BS especially considering you have an awesome OC on that 3930k. This "local computer shop" is just trying to make more money off of you.

Thanks so much Cagey. Now the question is to go for the Asus Strix, or Zotac card. About $50 difference between the two. Decisions, decisions! :)

Your "slow" 4.6GHz 6-core SB-E? Those guys are fucking idiots. You should never go there again.

Most agreed. That is pretty shady. There are some good comparisons out there and yes Gen 3 Intel Processors are showing a bit of age against the Gen6 series but its marginal and not enough to call a bottleneck of any sort. I would not go back there again and buy online.

And if you are running a Q6600, almost any CPU from Sandy Bridge forward (even G3258) would be an upgrade. (No - I'm not joking about G3258, either; if I were, I wouldn't be STILL spitting out feathers from that crow sandwich since I did exactly that upgrade to what I'm driving today. I replaced CPU, RAM, motherboard, and PSU; the latter is what failed, taking the motherboard I was running at the time with it. Everything else - including the case - is carryover.)

I have a 3930k @ 4.4 and running 980ti sli....games run great. Those dudes are tarded. Im on 1440p 144hz.

NewEgg jacked the STRIX from 429 (non-OC)/469 (OC) to 529 (non-OC)/599 (OC) USD and I was just about to pull the trigger on a 399 USD Zotac 980 Ti AMP! Omega when the MicroCenter next to my brother-in-law had the 1070 OC edition in stock for 439 USD. Now I have two on the way. I've only heard of Zotac. I've had many ASUS components with no issues. Thus, I went with ASUS (despite all the horror stories in regard to RMAs).

I've also only had good experiences with them. I usually go with ASUS because I have a depot close to me for RMA, but their cooler was so freaking big on the 1070 this time around (it's usually the smallest). Went with the EVGA SC.

You're gonna love it. I put it in 2 days ago and I still can't get over how magnificent it is. It's like I'm having sex but it's longer than two minutes.

It's never been 599 when it was in stock. It's only been that price when the seller listed wasn't Newegg.

The whole card is pretty big. Last night we dremeled off my wife's internal hard drive cage to get it to fit. She's still not happy that it's in the middle PCIe slot instead of the top where she wanted it so now we're on the hunt for better cases too, lol.

Well, Microcenter got our money this time as 10 USD OC edition over NewEgg's non-OC edition price made it a no-brainer.

I'd start shopping elsewhere.

I recently upgraded from a 3770k to a i7 6700k. the 3770k is a 3rd gen i7 i believe, so i figured 3 feature generation increase, along with access for thunderbolt, m.2 drives, and a built in new intel and killer nic where worth the upgrade.

so long story short, I wanted to benchmark a few games before and after the processor change. used the same videocard an EVGA 1080 gtx FTW +40 core +450 mem.

I will note the 3770k was clocked at 4.5ghz where I tested the 6700k at stock 4.2ghz and overclocked at 4.7ghz. Honestly, I saw almost no difference in gaming performance. I really thought it was funny reading all these threads where people are like, oh dont buy a 1080 on a 3770k build, youll be CPU bottlenecked, etc. Thats a blatent lie, feel free to upgrade to a 1080, and save yourself the money cause right now theres no added benefit in upgrading for games. you may see a difference in other applications that can fully utilize all cores, etc, but my new PC feels the same as my old machine, and mind you now i have windows installed on a m.2 x4 drive with 2500mb read and 2000mb write speeds, and a 4.7ghz 6700k. I couldnt tell the difference, less you told me which one i was on.

i havent changed from stock memory speeds of 2133 yet, but from what ive read that wont make much of a difference either, maybe 1-2fps at best.

anyway a picture is worth 1000 words so heres the benchmarks i took before and after the upgrade.

if you look in the corner of each screen youll see the CPU/GPU/FPS data.

I'd recommend evga for their customer service and warranty. oh yeah and the step up program incase the TI comes out!

I wouldn't pair anything less than an i5 Ivy k-series with the GTX 1070.
For the GTX 1080, i7 only (Ivy or better).

CPU bottlenecks are real, people. Already looking to replace my 4670K later this year. Suffers in GTA 5, Witcher 3, AC: Syndicate, Fallout 4... Basically all open world games.
