Yes, Rian Johnson Is Still Working on His "Star Wars" Trilogy

To the lament of Star Wars fans across the galaxy, Rian Johnson has confirmed he isn’t done with the franchise: “The Last Jedi” director took to Twitter on Wednesday to dispel the latest rumors, which claimed he was no longer attached to the new, fourth trilogy of movies shortly announced by Disney after the release of Episode VIII. JJ Abrams also revealed photography has wrapped on Episode IX Friday with a new cast photo; Oscar Isaac (Poe) appears to be relieved it's finally over.

Johnson was of course hired to create an entirely new Star Wars trilogy after his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He and Lucasfilm got along so well that they wanted to continue their partnership, and Johnson is lined up to write and direct at least the first installment of the new trilogy, which will take place in a new setting with new characters we’ve never met before in the Star Wars universe. He’s currently in the midst of plotting out the entire three-movie arc.

I won't condemn a whole universe of movies just because of one (or a few) bad experience.

I hated episode VIII... it all started with Luke, chucking his father's lightsaber over his shoulder and was cemented with the "crank call" scene with the command deck at the beginning of the movie and never got any better.

I will NOT watch ANY Rian Johnson Star Wars movies. He really gave a swift kick the faces of all the fans of the original star wars trilogy who were already reeling from the shock from episode VII that ALL the LucasFilm approved extended universe elements were to be completely ignored.

However, I am hopeful that episode IX will be better since he's not involved in it.

I really doubt the future of the star wars franchise with the recent decisions that have been made. I guess it's a good thing that the Hasbro has decided that the Transformers series should go back to its roots and ignore all the Michael Bay stuff.

We should have accepted it already when Lucas mis-edited the first trilogy. It was never going to get better. To be fair I didn't mind Rogue One as a one-off movie. If they could make another like it but without any franchise tie-ins that are there only for the money grub then I'll watch that too.

Even with how much I dislike TLJ, I am still interested in see what he does without having to adhere to the Skywalker legacy and the current SW timeline. Give him something in a far different time period, let him play around as needed, and give him good script doctors a lot of them.

There are a lot of both. I don't know if either "side" has any real majority or minority compared to the other. TLJ made a shit ton of money, but then Solo bombed (despite also making decent money) and merch sales dried up. The movie split the fanbase pretty hard and even newcomers to the franchise have to deal with that split.

Disney can make a good Star Wars film, see Rogue One. The problem is the JJ Abrams clown is running the new trilogy into the ground and that's also Disney's fault too. JJ turned Disney down the job to direct the new films till Disney offered him a ton of money. They should have found a director that was more interested in the job.

I lost faith in Star Wars with the prequels, the remastered trilogy was bad, and The nail in the coffin was phantom menace. My caring about Star Wars ended there.

At this point, I am just happy to be entertained by something pretty and not spend money on it (they all hit Netflix, so easy watch).

Episode 9 should reveal that basically all of Episode VIII was a force dream of a possible 'fucking horrible' possible future... Then they can fix that clusterfuck of a movie and get shit back on track, pick up with Rey meeting Luke on that island, but something different happens after that. Snoke isn't dead (fucking waste of a potentially nasty villian), Luke isn't dead (fucking stupid), and more importantly, Luke isn't all whiney about the force or about Kylo. The Poe and Finn stories aren't just trashed for no good reason, Maz isn't just ignored for no good reason.. For fucks sake..

I'm going to say you have at least one foot in the minority. I just thought the last two were fairly blah. The Last Jedi just seemed like a hot mess, in that they didn't really know what they wanted to do, and if they did, they didn't do it very well. Much like the Solo movie, just seemed to go through the motions of whatever story they wanted to tell. I mostly blame the writers, as they didn't really seem to have a good story worked out, now whether all the SJW stuff is what caused them to have such a out of whack story is for others to decide.

When I initially heard they were doing a post-ROJ series, I had hoped it would be a Grand Admiral Thraw story arc, but then Disney came in and decided that the expanded universe didn’t need to be a thing, so....

I consider myself a Star Wars fan apart from other fans. If you toured my house or work space youd see stars wars vehicles galor but not single reference to all the ancillary bs like jedis and sith. As an artist and an engineer Im obsessed with ralph mcquarries "lived in universe" and designs. I have a huge display at work including a "sales features" poster for the AT-AT. I also consider myself a movie buff. "Last Jedi" is, star wars aside, one of the worst fucking movies Ive ever seen. Thats including the prequels. Its literally just 2 hours of discortent nonsense and bait and switch plot lines thatt go no where. its a fucking travesty that carrie fishers last film was this wet garbage. at least anton yelkin went out on a high note with "the green room". The sad thing is "Solo" is close to great and no one will remember it a year from now. Rian did great with "brick" but man he murdered star wars.

Disney seems to selectively hate the expanded universe. Its not pefect but theres so much good material they threw out the window.

When the old EU was killed Lucasfilm said that creators could still draw from it for new stories. Thrawn showed up in Rebels and people seemed pretty pleased about how he was handled there.

JJ Johnson needs to go.

thats why I say "selectively". At first they were like "f*** EU" Then they realised thrawn is a total cashcow and they couldnt write an interesting villain to save their lives. I watched rebels, its pretty great after the second season. Im guessing theyll keep the kid and thrawn in their back pocket until they run out of ideas. I havent watched resistance yet, the animation is "beast machines" painful to look at.

Those that hate it definitely whine and whinge the loudest though. I personally thought Rogue One was brilliant, Solo was meh and episodes VII / VIII were 'OK'. But ultimately they are just movies.

Rogue One was good but doesn't stand up as well with repeat viewings...outside of Jyn Erso we pretty much know nothing about the various main characters and most people probably can't even remember most of their names...Solo was actually better overall with some nice character development...they went a bit overboard with giving us too many Easter Eggs to things we didn't need the answers to (how did Solo get his name, his blaster weapon etc) but it still stands up better in the long run then Rogue One

it was sloppy writing and after watching 7, I was well past done. Was bored most of the film. The prequels being so awful and 7? didn't care to see any of the rest of the nonsense. I didn't care about Rey, Luke, Kylo. it felt so hamfisted from the start. Just not put together very well. Unimaginative.
