Basically, no matter how I attempt to RDP to this machine from my Win7 machine, I either get errors, or it just fails to connect all together.

Thoughts?

How are you initiating it? By computer name or IP? Verify the Ubuntu machine's IP address. Also, on the Ubuntu machine, go to System>Preferences>Remote Desktop and see what it says for how the machine is reachable.

I have a question though. Is it possible to remote between Linux and Windows and actually control the desktop? When I remote in to my Ubuntu machine, I seem to get a second instance of the desktop, not the original.

xrdp is like terminal services on Windows, you do not connect to the active desktop, each user that connects gets their own desktop.
If you use VNC instead of RDP, you should be able to control the active desktop.
