XP Pro not keeping file associations

I recently started having trouble with xp keeping file associations. What I mean is I will open up a .mpeg file and windows will ask me what program I want to open it with, I choose windows media player and click always open this file with this program option. Every time I open another file with that extension it asks me again! It does this for just about every type of media file and I cant get it to go away.

I believe it started doing this after I uninstalled quicktime player though I cant be sure. I am missing something here?
 
try reinstalling quicktime, then adjusting the quicktime options so that it doesn't automatically restore file associations.
 
Might want to check and make sure WMP is set to handle all media type files. Open WMP, open the Options menu, Click the File Types Tab, and place a check mark in the box for what ever file types you want WMP to play.
