These are pretty basic questions so they may be out of place for a more advanced networking section but I was wondering why I can't set a password for a shared directory over a windows XP network. I swear it is possible to do this though I don't remember how. If I could password access to seperate folders or even access to the entire computer in the workgroup, I would be happy. I am trying to set up a central server to share music / dvds throughout my apartment and I would like to password those resources, if there are any other solutions that I am missing let me know. Thanks for your time.

On XP Pro you can, if you disable simple file sharing. Once simple file sharing is disabled...you treat your shares just like you did with NT 4 Workstation or 2K Pro...per user, per local user group, etc.

One of the ways is....open Winders Explorer==>Tools drop down menu, Folder Options, View tab, scroll down..the last checkbox is "Simple File Sharing"..checked by default, uncheck it.
