Why not just buy one with aftermarket cooler to begin with at that point? You can have them for not much over 400 anyways. So this is for those who don't care about aftermarket cooling.

Is the blower cooler that bad on this? Or is this sprinkled with a shade of hyperbole?

I honestly don't know and this deal is tempting me greatly.

Personally, it is very tempting for my relative’s PC. If you’re ok with stock peformance what I would do is try undervolting and setting a custom fan profile.

Generally blowers are fine if you don’t care about that small % from OCing.

at 50 dollars cheaper you can get it plus a shitty AIO for pretty much the same price as the aftermarket card and the reference PCB's still miles better than the aftermarket ones.

little of both.. the cooler works just fine but obviously there are trade offs to make it work. all depends on you and what you're willing to deal with for noise level.

The blower cooler is just fine, especially considering it is the 5700 Non XT variant. I already own one from a couple of months ago and it is a fantastic card. The question I have for you guys is, I can buy one for $295 with tax but, it would be to replace the RX580 I have, since I already own a 5700 in one computer and a Vega 56 in another.

Please convince me not to buy this. (No, the fact that it is a reference card is not a reason. :) )

:D Nah, I would want one of these for the price or something like the 5700XT or maybe the 5800 in the future. I came with in one click on placing the order before I backed off. :)

Friends don't let friends buy 5700 [XT] cards with the blower cooler fan. Your ears will thank you. :p

Well, when I saw the $269 price with the google express discount, my eyes grew big! Then I saw the price with tax of about $295 and my mind came back down to earth. :D ;)

The reference blower doesn't have very good mounting pressure and uses a graphite thermal pad, so you end up with core temp over 90C and TJmax around 110-112C right out of the box. I took off the cooler, replaced the graphite pad with IC Diamond 24ct, and increased mounting pressure with some thin rubber grommets I cannibalized from Phanteks case thumbscrews. I didn't control for ambient temperature, but I locked the fan speed at 35% (~2100rpm) before and after the "washer mod." Here are my Unigine Superposition 100% stock and washer mod results:

    Before (Stock):

    After (Washer Mod):

TJmax dropped 12C and core drop 7C. The blower doesn't become obnoxious until around 50% (about 2800rpm), so an aggressive fan curve and a modest undervolt can keep TJmax well into the 80s if you're willing to put up with the hair dryer in your case.

That is strictly on the XT and even then, only if you are doing a Furmark benchmark. Those temps are not for normal gaming sessions. I did the washer mod on the 5700 Reference model and it made no difference whatsoever.

Believe me when I say, I am not trying to appear to be a contrarian. I just wanted to say it is best to do the softmod first, test to see if the card can handle it and then, if you still want too, flash it then. :) Also, power draw on a flashed 5700 is higher than a stock 5700XT, according to the tests I have seen done. (I have not flashed mine.)

^Do the reference designs even have a dual BIOS switch? BIOS mod sounds very risky otherwise.

I'm curious how you measured "no difference whatsoever." Granted my results aren't real-world gaming results, they're controlled and reproducible, which allows me to eliminate variables that create noise and deviation between runs.

Just for the hell of it, I ran Kingdom Come Deliverance with my 1150mv + 8% power level profile and fan curve that doesn't kick up over 40% until 90C.
    upload_2019-10-3_8-44-57.png

We see core temperatures bouncing between 77-81C and TJmax regularly between 90-96C. TJmax isn't very far off from my synthetic testing, and this is even with the more "aggressive" fan curve. Note: dips are loading screens and fast traveling.

You have an XT, I have a non XT version. Unfortunately, the Reference model does not have a dual bios switch, or I might be willing to give the bios flash a try.

Edit: Oops, I just reread my post and was thinking about something else, I guess. The thing is, you are not reaching 110C.

I can't go back in time and undo the mods, but you'll have to take my word for it when I say it was. This thing is a hot bitch for sure. :D

Looking at reddit in the AMD section, 5700XT seems to have some significant driver issues. Just FYI...

I built a system with one. Actually 5700xt stock cooler is miles ahead of how vega sounded with blower. So its not that bad. I stressed it for about an hour and the fan was barely audible. Do the same thing on vega 64 blower and you will appreciate it.
