Xbox One CONFIRMED not always online required : http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/21/xbox-one-doesnt-require-internet-connection

Best news of the launch.

Worst news of the launch. Ugh.

UPDATE : Kinect will be required to be connected to the console at all times in order for the console to function. (thanks Olaf16) : http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/21/xbox-one-will-not-function-without-kinect-attached

Ugh.

I'm not planning on buying either console (glorious pc master race, real life, etc etc) but PS4 is going to be the superior console this time around, assuming they can deliver on everything they claimed in their press conference.

Live = facebook in my eyes. Too many ads, too much clutter around actual content.

I think the bigger push towards online this generation will make the pay to play online vs free to play online a bigger deal. I wouldn't doubt if Microsoft adds value added service to Gold and allows Silver to play for free. However, I wouldn't doubt if Microsoft does something completely stupid too and raises the price of Gold and discontinues Silver.

Live has nothing to do with the shitty Xbox UI. I find the actual service (live) pretty decent and has a lot of features I really like (cross game chat is awesome)

I do agree with you though. I'm not a fan of the last update either. I'm paying 60.00/yr for live, I don't want to get bombarded by a mix of actual console menus and Ad's.

In contrast, I have next to no Ad's on PS3 and not only is the UI clutter free and easy to use, but it's online services are free as well.

I'm no Sony fanboy (see quote)... but unless MS addresses all of these issues with the next Xbox, I'll likely be skipping it and going with the PS4

Peter Molyneux?

Pass. :p

They've already announced it's much weaker, has worse relations to developers and will have their usual BS ads/paid for online, this ship has already sailed. :D

I'm guessing as a direct stab at Sony they show the actual hardware within 10 minutes of starting.

I fully expect Microsoft to unveil the console today. After Sony had their event Major Nelson tweeted something like "Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach."

Anyway, for those unable to watch any of the live streams, I know JoyStiq will be doing a liveblog during the event. At about 12pm EST they'll have it up on the home page. I'm sure Engadget and The Verge are doing the same.

The Pizzahut app totally justifies $60 a year! :p

Hopefully Microsoft can "wow" me! I wasn't impressed with Sony's PS4 reveal.

As always - give me 1080p/60. I don't care about Kinect 2, Facebook integration, "sharing," or anything else like that. I simply want more horsepower.

I suspect a lot of Kinect 2.0 crap, multimedia blah blah blah, not much that gamers care about.

All I really care about are the system specs and the controller changes.

That's the whole problem right there, Sony never delivers. If you remember all the promises about the PS3 then you'll remember how it was supposed to trounce the 360 in terms of computing power and graphics. Well, it turns out the GPU was underpowered and the Cell processor had two of its cores disabled and didn't even live up to the performance on the cores it did have. Additionally MS was smart enough to have unified memory architecture back in 2005, something Sony is so busy bragging about here 8 years later.

Sony can't live up to their own hype. They can't even show off their UI yet because it doesn't exist. Live does have way too much clutter and ads but it's far more functional than PSN. Sony always over promises and people always believe them.

I'm sticking with my prediction that, as far as hardware goes, it'll be similar to the PS4.

I tested, you can use that app without Gold, heh. Yes, I was surprised.

I don't see that being the case this time around. We know what the hardware is and it's x86 so there won't be any smoke and mirrors this time around as far as what the hardware is capable of. It will definitely be faster than the new Xbox.

With the online stuff, again, I have no doubt it'll be just as good as Live this time. There's no reason for it not to be considering Sony already knows what they need to one up Microsoft or at least be more competitive on this subject.

I really think Sony will have the new generation in the bag. I mean, no to jinx them, but how could they not?

You can't say it'll definitely be faster than the xbox. We don't know what's in the xbox yet. Also, again, that's exactly what everyone said about the PS3, even for years after it was released, it just didn't turn out to be true.

As far as the software, well, it's MicroSOFT. They're a software company. It's what they do. They're really really good at it and even Sony has admitted that their own history as a hardware company has been a problem. I'm not convinced they are able to turn that around quickly. Competition for the next generation will probably be largely on the software front and I don't see MS screwing that up.

Well in their defense platform exclusive titles looked incredible, seeing The Last of Us and the new game from the Heavy Rain guys goes a long way in showing off what was possible.

So apparently you missed the PS4 Killzone technical review PDF?

...but they'll probably do this instead.

Microsoft has done a lot of dumb shit this year.
I'm thinking they'll continue their reign of arrogance and "we know what's best for you" BS.
I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but TBH it doesn't matter what they do....at this point, I'm not planning on buying the next console of theirs.

I hate this guy....I've seen him on what, 2 conferences now? Smugness is not a good quality.

Yeah - HD era.
Uhh no.
Ps2 and Xbox had HD games before the 360 dumbass.

I have a feeling we're in for a bunch of unification/home theater BS.

The XBOX ONE

Yeah... wouldn't have called that. Doesn't seem like a good name.

However, the system shots I really dig. I've always hated how consoles try to look "futuristic"... this looks like an AV Receiver or something... it looks like it belongs under your TV. Well done for that.

The xbox one looks like a VCR, why would they make it so blocky looking and not ergonomic looking?

The controller also....looks pretty much the same as the 360, D-pad seems to be changed from that stupid "round" type of design to just a straight up d-pad.

"Here at Xbox, it's no secret that we love gaming."

LOLWUT
Could've fooled me with all the tacked on shit you've put on the 360 so far, cluttering up the damn dashboard with nonsense and ads.

....and I'm done.
New dashboard, same clutter nonsense. Skype, Netflix, "Trending", movies.

I found that amusing as well. Especially since they buried the indie game section and I see more ads for TV shows I don't watch than content for actual games I play...
