im looking for a good cooling solution witch maybe uses up 2 pci slots, and is very good for volt modding a x800xl agp. Im currently at 430 and 550 and thats not very much improvement from 400 and 500.im not planing to upgrade till dx10 cards. i have a x2+3800
is that a good match for a x800xl and 1.5gigs? Has anyone volt modded a x800xl ? and how were ur results. Thanks for all the help guys and sorry for all the questions but i just wanted a couple Qs answerd

im running the arctic cooling silencer 5 on mine (look at sig) and the zalman does a very good job at cooling aswell. im not sure about volt modding but if you want the most out of the card, you should try water cooling, but i bet thats out of the question

You're not going to find a better stock air cooler than the AC S 5. I would not necessarily expect the degree of OC that Krayzie135 got because that's pretty freakin high especially on the memory but certainly you should improve a bit more on both your OC and your gpu/system temps. Your X2 3800+ is a good cpu for the card it pretty much guarantees you no cpu bottleneck unless you're over 1600x1200 maxed out on AA and AF.

perhaps if both the zalman vf700, the vf900, and the thermalright v1ultra didn't exist, then maybe.

maybe if by stock you mean stock as in they sometimes use arctic coolers on some cards as the stock cooler... but that is about all you can say, it is slightly better then an ATI stock cooler.

if you are going to volt mod, get the zalman vf900, that thing will be able to move more heat away from the GPU then some watercooling setups. (the non custom types)

You have any comparison scores for how much improvement you got by going from 400/500 up to 450/600? I'd like either some benchmark data or some fps comparisons or something if you have it handy.

Thanks!

well i have a x800gto with 16 pipes should be similat to x800xl, at 400 490 it scored 4970 3Dm2k5 at 465 575 it scored 5580, with amdxp @ 2.1. the cpu might be bottlenecking some so i dont know how much that helps you.

dbaldus you can probably add a couple hundred points to gesicht's scores given your cpu compared to his if you could reach the same clocks

Yeah I'm not going to argue that the Zalman's not a better cooler but mrmodman was asking for a 2 pci slot cooler

fthe 450/600 is MAX stable i have gotten it to but run at about 444/585 to keep it on the safe side. i dont know if these scores are ever used but i havent instaled 3DMark for a long time as i dont like it. so these scores are from ATI Tray Tools benchmark thing.

from the reviews i have seen the Thermalright V-1 is THE best gpu cooler i have seen that is not water cooling but comes very close to it

Not to thread hijack but dang 65xx on 05 that's pretty darn high for the xl. It seems that while the R430 cores won't go sky high on some cards the ram and get a ways up there and that seems to really benefit the xl

I called Zalman the other day and the guy told me that the vf900 was the best cooler for the x800XL and that the vf700 would only be quieter but may not be any better than the stock cooler on the card as far as temps and overclocks go. Anybody have any real experience with this? Seems to me like he was just trying to get me to buy the more expensive cooler...

you have the AGP virsion right? if you do then its normal because the AGP card is a little bit longer than the PCI-E

yeah it's the AGP, the one being sold refurbed from ATI right now for pretty cheap.

I guess I'll rig something up. The NV silencer 5 was too long for my 7900gt, maybe I can use some of the part I cut off to extend my sister's x800xl cooler :p

Yup sounds about right. I didn't see your system stats but I'd guess with that score you're near 3Ghz for a P4 C or 2.2Ghz for an A64

That seems a little low. On 03, I get 10052 with just an A64 3000+, 1GB DDR, and an x800xl @ 420/530. You have an A64 x2 3800+, 1.5 RAM, and x800xl @ 430/550...right?

Woops there was his cpu right in the first post  silly me

Anyway, his score seems right if his X2 is at stock its only 2Ghz compared to yours at 1.8Ghz. Plus 10Mhz on the core and 20Mhz on the ram isn't all that much. So the 1K difference in your scores seems proper.
