I'm planning on buying an Asus K8N4-E Deluxe in combination with AMD Clawhammer, either 3200 or 3700.

I'm not sure regarding the VideoCard
Should I get the X800pro or the 6800GS both are pretty much 200 bucks.
I'm not planning on overclocking the Videocard, will be using Watercooling, tho. Swiftech MCW55
What are tho pro and cons?

Anybody using the same combo I'm planning on?

Thanks.

6800 GS performs as well as a 6800 GT and has a massive OCing headroom. The 6800 GT outperforms a x800 pro.

doesnt outperform My x800 pro :D

6800GS is better, but not always and not by as much as people seem to think. Bah, if you *were* overclocking I'd pick up a 6800GT or, even better, an X800GTO2 :D

They are pretty even, but the 6800gs has the slight edge. The 6800gs is ~5-10% faster than the x800pro in most games and ~5-10% slower then the 6800gt. Both overclock ~75 mhz. 6800gs has sm3 if thats matters to you.

Since your looking at the 6800gs I assume this is a PCI-E card. A better ATi solution would be the HIS x800gto = $205 shipped. The HIS x800gto is a factory overclocked version with clock speeds of 500/500 mhz. This gives it the exact specs of a x850pro with a nice quite dual slot cooler (but you have water cooling :)). The x850pro/HIS x800gto performs on par with the 6800gs. If you need AGP the x800pro is your only solution for ~$200.

PS. If you are installing a watercooling heatsink why are you not overclocking? Warrenty is already void and it now has extra cooling.

The 6800GS is a better buy over the GT no matter which way you cut it. The GS overclocks very high, and why pay ~$70 more for the same performance?

because of the fact u can overclock the gts to clost to ultra speeds.... its always a catch 22.

I am buying a GT for this fact and also the fact that i cannot find any GS's that offer dual dvi. Until i see a GS with dual dvi at $199 or close to it i would have to go with the GT.

And you can OC a GS past ultra speeds.

It's just not worth paying the extra $$ for a GT over the GS.

i would almost agree with that if there were dual-dvi GS's available.... and its not all about mhz either, you forget that you still are missing some pipes. That hardware difference is large enough to be wary of equating speeds with performance.

edit: dont get me wrong, once i find a dual dvi gs, i'm definitely getting it but im not expecting to get some superman board that can outperform a ~$400 card.

well the XFX 6800GS comes clocked at 485Mhz core & 1100 memory, so that WILL easily beat a stock 6800GT @ 350/1000.

You'd need the 6800GS to OC to 533 core to beat a 6800GT OC'd to 400 core (Ultra speeds).

But considering the price differences, the 6800GS is obviously a better deal. And the 6800GS is using a newer process so it will probably OC very well possibly over the 533Mhz required to beat an Ultra or OC'd GT.

So....

Which would be faster? This HIS x800GTO overclocked to the max, or the 6800GS overclocked to the max? (Already there are 485/1100 XFX 6800GS's out....)

Also, how does one of these stack up to a 7800GT or X1800XL? Do they absolutely pale in comparison? (I'm off to read some reviews...)

Why an 800pro?

Why not an x800xl? or for a bit more x850pro?

Very, very close to 6800GT performance and very cheap for how far it gets you.

I think the x800pro is the wrong match up in this case.

Well, sounds like the 6800GS is the way to go.... The reason why I'm not planning on overclocking the Videocard is very simple. In Videocards I think you get what you pay for and several posts on this site seems to confirm this. I I get bored in the wintermonths, I might start playing around on it...*lol*
I'm using the Watercooling for the CPU and Northbrigde. Adding a Heatsink to the GPU cuts the noise down...*S*

Thanks for the input Guys

"you get what you pay for"

You mean that you think you can't get performance equal to a higher priced card by overclocking? Or what?

I don't say that.

I just prefer to have a Card that runs stable and I can relay on....

Congrats to everybody who runs a OC card, stable.... :D

what about a connect3d x800gto that is flashable to x800xt or a 6800gs which costs 20$ more (this is my predicament)

plz help

i think that is better than GS yes or abotu equal when both are fully overclocked.....jsut pick on what games u play....ati for hl2 or what ever for nvidia ....battlefield 2 is nvidia but ati runs it pretty similar

For the money the 6800 GS is a great buy and it has smoked the X800 pro in most of the tests. It has more rendering capabilities and has more oerclocking ability.

Nvidia is throwing out great products right now and it would be wise not to miss out. :D

Even the X1600XT could not compete with the GS. Poor, poor ATI :(

I just replaced my x800pro with a 6800gs and for the same settings 1280 x 1024 game pref for 3d settings....World of Warcraft is much smoother and detail is more pronounced. Go with the 6800gs

John

6800GS. The 6800GT is faster than the X800Pro (I know I've owned both) The 6800GS is just the slightest bit slower than a 6800GT, so I'd go with that.

I just got rid of an X800GTO 12 pipe card. The OpenGL performance on the ATI card was abominable. If you are playing games in the future which are based off the Doom3 engine, you will not be pleased with an X800 Pro.

The C3D x800 GTO only has a 80-90% success rate. Mine unlocked successfully, but didn't overclock as good as the unlocked GTO2 cards ("only" 500/1050 was completely stable for mine).

If you don't mind the odds, get the C3D x800 GTO. It is a pretty fast card after unlocking and overclocking, and it's cheaper than the 6800 GS.

He didn't want to overclock though. The HIS x800gto is a x850pro renamed 500/500 clocks with 12 pipes thats on par with the 6800gs if he prefers ATI. Its a tad cheaper then the 6800gs.

osalcido didn't say he didn't want to overclock. :p Read who I quoted above.

oh, well the 3dconnect x800gto is the best card for the money. Its what I bought and it unlocked great. (running 540/560, but I would have been more then happy with 500/500 clocks with pipes unlocked for ~$180). techpowerup article actually reports close to a 95% success rate, but never know when 3dconnect will run out of good cores :). OP didn't want to overclock

My x800pro is pretty damn fast. You guys are acting like the 6800gt is like 25% faster than a x800 pro lol. :p

I recommend the 6800GS too, it's faster in almost everything and in some open GL games (Doom 3, Doom 3 ROE, Quake 4, Call of Duty 1 & 2,) Also in some up and comming Open GL Games Like Prey (based on the doom 3 engine), it is in a whole other performance class better than the X800 Pro.
