Microsoft's Xbox 360 was considered hacker-proof, but its firmware has now been opened for modders

From bad AC adapters to overheating GPU cores, the Xbox 360 has given Microsoft some bad press over the last several months.

A hacker who calls himself "TheSpecialist" stated that he has installed his own custom firmware into the Xbox 360. He claims that with the custom firmware, he is able to create directly bootable backups of original DVD games. The firmware, claims TheSpecialist, circumvents the Xbox 360’s content checking by ignoring the required disc signatures that are present on retail games. However, TheSpecialist states that he will not release his firmware due to obvious piracy concerns.

TheSpecialist tells us that Microsoft did not sign the firmware that allows him to gain full control of the console’s internal hard drive. On Microsoft’s original Xbox, casual modding is not as prevalent as it was before, thanks to clever thinking on Microsoft’s part using its Xbox Live! online service. The company uses its online service and routinely sends updates to the Xbox, which detects if non-original hardware or software is in use. Many are expecting Microsoft to perform similar updates on its Xbox 360 console.

TheSpecialist claims:

I doubt you’ll see some kind of other hack soon, that lets you boot unsigned code for example. [Microsoft] did a very good job on the [Xbox 360] itself this time. However, they made a big mistake by forgetting about the firmware. They even didn’t remove the debug routines from the FW [firmware], quite amazing.

The 360 has a little bit more advanced protection in its FW than the original Xbox, but still, they [forgot] about the debug routines, that were very helpful to us, and most importantly: not signing the firmware.

So far there have not been any official mods released for the Xbox 360.

So this guy is basically making a statement without any sort of proof.

I walked on the moon with just a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how because I don't want the moon to get overpopulated.

Not by Microsoft it wasn't They have never said it was "Hacker-Proof". They've only said they've taken larger measures to prevent it. They also have said, no officially, that they expect it to be cracked within six months of release and they have methods to deal with that.

I fail to really see much of anything in this. Since he's not releasing this and there's no proof...what does this even mean?
Nobody's ever claimed the 360 was "hacker-proof" but that it simply was better equipped to deal with hacks.
I'm change my thinking when I start to see 90% of players with 50,000 gamer points, footage of people playing PS1 ROMS on their Xbox, and people selling burns on the street.

if u know a little about what hes talking about and read the whole thing u dont need proof, he provided proof

comon k600 ill give ya more credit than being a nub, its easy to understand, if you think its unhackable YOU are living on the MOON.

TheSpecialist, who has been credited with a firmware hack before, which actually went unreleased because of several very good reasons. Considering this makes the guy credible enough, let’s move on to a few excerpts from his recent posts:

Not signing the firmware is indeed a major mistake, as it allows the hacker to gain full control of the drive. Microsoft can issue a forced update via Live to disable the modification, but a new firmware could be installed again which goes undetected. As such the hacker is in control of the cat/mouse game.

An important detail however is that the system will not run any unsigned code itself. As such it is impossible to flash the firmware by software, and you will need to have a hardware programmer to reprogram the firmware. Obviously this disqualifies the hack for any general usage. Thankfully, even if it would be usable to pirate games, hacker ethics and fear of Microsoft’s legal department stops the guys from actually distributing their findings. However, considering the fact that modding consoles has become an industry on its own, people with less noble intentions may intend to capitalize on the hackers’ findings now that it is out in the open where Microsoft slacked on security.

Considering the remarks made between the lines about the other parts of Xbox 360 security, actually running homebrew code such a Media Center modification is still a long way off, if it will ever be possible at all.

so yes u will have to be somewhat L33t, and or some mod company will do the dirty work and profit.

im sure the ps3, and rev will have people working on hacking it as well, for some ppl its a hobby. :p

i was providing this info as just what it is, NEWS.

If they'll let you you mouse and keyboard in SP I might buy it... but probably not. MS already blew it.

None of this matters.

Because if you want to hack your 360 you're going to have to get used to life w/ out live. So no friends, no mp, no achievement points.

I thought he didn't hack the 360 firmware... I was pretty sure that he just found out that it wasn't signed (which would open the doors to other hackers out there). TheSpecialist was the guy that hacked the Xbox1 DVD firmware, and that's why it's believeable - he didn't release that because he didn't want MS to sue his ass.

WorldRunner: ACTUALLY, because it would circumvent the disc protection from stage one altogether, theoretcially, you COULD run XBL. It's not like a modchip where a foreign BIOS is loaded or a separate piece of hardware is inserted to get around the protection - it would basically run the burned DVD like it was an original using the original DVD drive nonetheless.

They would eaily verify the exact size of your bios or hdd, which is simple and easy. Good bye xbl hackers. Have fun doing nothing.

Yeah I know... that's why this firmware hack would be so awesome! No change in the 360 means no way of detecting it via XBL. So you'd have a hacked 360, that could play your own burned homebrew/backups, but you could also connect to Live without being detected as a homebrew/backup game. Simple and easy.

Again, theoretically, this DVD firmware hack would be undetectable from XBL. There is NO BIOS/HDD/DVDrom or physical hardware changes whatsoever... Hell you might not even have to lose your warrantee if they could use an expliot (like the flash xploit of the first kiosk disc) to install the new firmware.

So in this case you'd be saying "Hello XBL hackers. Have fun playing games on XBL... I can't tell the difference since your hardware isn't technically modded in anyway."

I believe that Microsoft started checking firmware via XBL late in the shelf life of the original Xbox. Physical changes aren't the only thing they noticed; it was just the first way they attacked hackers. They came up with more inventive ways to fight it.

Hey guys listen up. I hacked the Xbox 360 firmware alone. I offer no proof because I respect Microsoft, and can't/won't say how I did it, but rest assured that I did hack the firmware.

He might as well have my name...

Could be interesting if other people figure out the same method. Never underestimate the people after a decent buck...

So...he has no proof?

Proof isn't required anymore...this is the internet. I sexed Brittany Spears in the an0s before she got pregnant. In fact, it's my baby (I realize that most people have to have regular intercourse for this, but my superhuman seed could impregnate a woman just by skin contact).

and heres The Specialist in one of his many forms

i gave credit where credit was due, the specialist has been around for awhile and like the article said he has credit from another hack.with just a little research things arent hard to find, though i did not go looking for video, didnt know he released, big ups to him!

:p naysayers

what better song then Smack my bitch up, lol.

comon now tell us, we want to visit the moon too, especially wearing sandals shorts and a t-shirt, hmm guess its like a beach?

That video means nothing my tv has rca input in the front and in the back. The cd is spinning and doing shit but that doesnt mean its actually playing pgr3 it could be playing a burnt cd with music or something while a different xbox is playing the game.

people just dont read these days i guess, that and dont have a understanding of programming n such things outside basic high school teachings. :(

No I just prefer people to back up there claims with actual proof instead of evidence that can easily be faked by a 5year old chimpanzee with down syndrome.

Relax guys, If you can't discuss this like adults, then please don't post.

I know for a fact that the DVD drive firmware hack works for the original Xbox. I'm inclined to think the hack presented for the 360 is legit as well. I do believe it's time to buy a 360.
