ok plz dont give me any biased crap i want to know what you guys think is a better gfx card
since this x1800xl is $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102610
and the 7800gt is around that price too(i know it will drop with 7900 release, but until we know benchmarks on the 7900gt i want to know which of these two is better)
so which one is better with this pc set up

cpu: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16819103562

i got mine for $88 :) r u gonna OC? i wanna know wut ram ur getting, fix ur link :p

If you plan on overclocking and modding the card I give the nod to the X1800XL. If you plan on running the cards as they come out of the box without any tweaks get a good 7800GT overclocked eddition card FTW. ;)

I would get the 7800GT just by going by toms hardware the 7800gt seems to do so much better then the X1800XL, of course the 7900GT should be here soon for 300$ and that will perform better if you want to wait a couple days.

Those FEAR benchmarks are a load of shite. By those graphs I should buy a pair of 6600GT's or a 6800GT instead of a x1800xt, please

Go with whatever is cheaper.

The 7800 GT will slap the X1800 XL's ass, the proof is here http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/page16.html

EDIT: it's ok now.

What??? Yeah, those graphs are crap. Look at that. They say the 6600GT performs better than the X1800XL.

And look at the 2nd graph. They say 2xAA with soft-shadows, but you can't have anti-aliasing with soft-shadows in F.E.A.R. And then on the next page they backtrack with their graphs, saying that only nVidia cards supports AA with soft-shadows!!! WHICH IS ALSO WRONG! No cards do. I will also tell you that with my X850XT, I'm getting much higher framerates for that resolution than they're getting (try 15-20 FPS more). They basically pulled these numbers out of their butt. It's bad when you make up benchmarks... I'll never go to Tom's Hardware again. Well... at least the 3dMark05 scores the show a few pages later are pretty accurate... except wait, no they're not. They're showing the default scores, but with the non-default AA and AF settings. And they show 3dMark05 scores better with higher settings. OK, that takes the cake. They're screwed up. Everyone go here and tell them what you think about their horrendous exaggerations: http://www.tomshardware.com/site/su...no Kreiss, Bert Töpelt, Daniel Schuhmann

In terms of the OP's question, however, I would consider the X1800XL and the 7800GT to be extremely close in performance... when they differ, it's usually because of the individual game. Go with whatever you feel comfortable with, ATI or nVidia.

x1800 xl aiw owner until about 3 days ago. and ill tell you they can overclock madly. gave me nice frames in cod2 and thats all i cared about . i got x800 xl for css small upgrade x800 xt for bf2. x1800 xl for cod2 now im back to x850.

but yea. both cards are great. x1800 xl will give overclockers some fun.

Tom's Crapware has been proven many times to have gone way, way downhill in the credibility department. I don't trust anything they say.

As for which is better, I can say I'm pretty happy with my 7800 GT. I've never used the x1800 xl, but I'm sure it's a good card, too. And most reasonable reviews I've seen show the two cards to be pretty close in performance. So I'd say go with whichever you like more, or whichever is cheaper.

Honestly since nVidia is good at getting stuff on the shelf fast. I would hold off a week and get a 7900GT. It would be your best move at this point. The 7900GT is the replacement for the 7800GTx. And most are expecting it to performe a hair better then the current 256MB GTx cards.

If you can't wait a week. A eVGA 7800GT is a good buy, and you can take advantage of the "Step-Up" program to get a 7900GT for very little more.

IMHO I say yea get what's on sale. You're not going to be able to tell to much of a diffrence between the cards from a game standpoint.

i've had both and they are equally good. it all depends on what you want to do to your card. if your lazy at overclocking then get the 7800gt, if your will to tweak some then the x1800xl is for you.

i personally chose the x1800xl because i like ocing my hardware and the 7800gt didn't satisfy that. i'm not saying it's a bad card probably the only bad things about both these cards is their LOUD stock cooling, other than that their both great. which ever you can get the cheapest.

At stock speeds the 7800GT will usually be sligtly faster then the X1800 XL and AFAIK it can still be had for a little less then the X1800XL. On the other hand, though, the X1800XL will usually overclock better and it also has a slight IQ advantage (HQ AF, etc...).

So the overall the two cards are pretty evenly matched.

ok I have now owned both a 7800 gt and now have a x1800 though it is a xt, number one the fan isnt that loud and certainly aint louder than a 7800 gt that thing woke me up at night when I was sleeping lol.

And secondly the x1800xl at stock is worst than a 7800 but overclock that and give it a duel cooler and man that card blows the 7800 out of the water.

i cringe everytime i see someone post a link from Tom's, its like why bother anymore?

i presonally own the X1800XL, wasnt a planned by but i got it near release for whats it going for now, so i went ahead and got it (can't pass up super deals like that can we?)

from my experience i like it, it really didn't replace anything but i do currently have a 6800GT installed, comparing sound between the two is day and night, the XL although louder isn't insanely loud, the heat output isn't bad, infact my case is alot cooler with my XL then the GT, funny how that happend, either way i enjoy the card, i enjoy being really finicky with it, enabling certain eye candies, seeing how it would run, testing out older games, OCing it, and even seeing how it runs under clocked (which was almost dangerously done, glad i didn't burn the damn thing out)

my vote is for the XL, but between the two cards its a coin toss

My BBA X1800XL artifacts on the desktop when overclocking to 550/550 on the autodetect on CCC(overdrive) :(

thx for the feedback! This is my first build and i dont think i will be overclocking anything so from what ive read the 7800gt is the logical choice

No the logical choose would be ATI since Xfire works on Intel M/B and NV doesn't. If I was Intel I wouldn't allow NV to change their minds . Let NV build for AMD who really cares now. If you read more topics here you would Know you can pick up a X1800xt for $299

i actually just noticed that but im hoping hat the 7800gt is gonna fall to $250 without any MIR's or hopefully to even lower than that with the 7900 release.

well, i honestly doubt you'll find that, but GL in it, hell if you are buying from an online retailer i'd say good luck finding them shortly after the release

It's funny to hear debates about what is better when talking about similair cards because I used to be the same way. What are we talking about here 5 to 7 FPS difference? Hah! Just go with what's cheaper. Bottom line: You will be able to play the games you want to play at high settings with either card. These days cards that are a step or two behind the top of the line still play today's game perfectly. Hell I've got a BFG 7800 GS AGP that plays games as smoothly as Willy Wonkas Chocolate at very high settings. So save some money for a new vid game or something else. That is my advice...Oh and if you go with Nvidia get A BFG..Lifetime warranty and come overclocking built right in..

Regards,
Leno.
