I really loved the X-Wing and Tie Fighter - I bought both of those and also X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. Don't remember if I liked the vs. one much, must not have been as much fun since I don't remember it well? Anyway, I wonder if there's a game that has the great gameplay just like one of those first two but that will run well and look good using today's video cards & Windows XP?

Just looking around now, I see there's a "Direct3D patch" for XW vs TF... The reason I was thinking about this is that I was thinking of starting to build a MAME cabinet and was trying to remember which old (and recent too I guess) PC games I'd want to put on there also. I'll design and build my own "Star Wars yoke" for the classic Star Wars vector game using a SideWinder Dual Strike for the electronic guts.

There's always X-Wing Alliance.

Freespace 2 is generally recognized as the last great space sim, however. For a more modern game, there's X2: The Threat, though that's more like Privateer than anything else. Even closer to Privateer is Freelancer, though that's pretty simplistic.

I own and loved all of the Xwing series of games, but I found Xwing alliance too......different. It was more about weird ships and nifty things than just good old fashioned Rebel vs Imperial that made the rest of the games so awesome.

For a mame system, definatly go with X-wing + exp pack, Tie Fighter + exp packs and Xwing vs. Tie fighter

Do they work fine under Windows XP?

I'm almost afraid to play X-Wing again, I imagine the graphics will look so crappy by todays standards, it would be like trying to play Doom again? I really loved the game, it would be like seeing an old GF years later who'd gotten fat and ugly... Though, I don't think I tried the expansion packs to either X-Wing or Tie Fighter, hmm... Would be awesome to have the original exact gameplay of X-wing but with modern graphics.

Doh, I think I bought Freespace 2, but I can't find it now :(

X-Wing and Tie Fighter. I have yet to find a space sim that'll compete with those two. They're just so easy to pilot. Power priority (shield, engine, lasers), shield configuration (forward, aft) and weapon configuration (quad, dual, single). It's the perfect space controls in my opinion. Not even FreeSpace comes close.

When you're getting your ass kicked. Rerout remaining power in shield batteries to aft and give 100% priority to engines sacrificing shield generator and lasers. EVASIVE MANEUVERS! It can get pretty exciting balancing in a dogfight. Trying to shake off a dozen TIE's long enough to charge your lasers :)

I kinda avoided tie fighter at first, but i eventually found joy in blasting those rebel scum to scrap metal

When i tried the vs one, the controls weren't so smooth and i immediately went back to the DOS versions. :(

Ahhhh.....Missile Boat goodness......(digs through moving boxes for tie fighter game)

And Crit, you can always get Jump to Lightspeed expansion for Star Wars Galaxies. GREAT graphics, and nothing like walking around INSIDE the ship to get the turrets just like in the movies :D Course, ya have to like MMORPGs and be willing to pay the monthly fee :)

I agree. Newer games don't compete with the massive scale of the tie fighter and x-wing games. Remember how many missions they had?

Freespace 2. So much better than TIE Fighter which I loved to death.

Plus, FS2 still looks good, runs in 1024x768, and has multiplayer.

I'd vote for Freespace 2 and/or X-Wing Alliance with Darksaber's ship pack.

Thanks for the tip about the ship pack! I'll definately try that, I didn't know about it. Now I got to see if I can find my FS2 CDs...

Anybody know about running X-Wing or TF under XP? I don't think I can find those CDs either, all I found so far was the one I like least: XWvsTF :( Guess I'll have to download 'em off eMule or such. I've moved so many times and lost so much crap since I bought X-wing it's probably gone.

I don't know about the original dos based versions, but a few years ago they came out with a win95/98 cd version that will play on XP in compatibility mode.

DOS versions are no-gos under XP, the 95 editions are the only solution.

Who has all those 3.5" floppies anymore anyway? And even if you did, half would probably be dead by now.

Tie Fighter > Any other space fighter game...

Tons of missions, tons of cool fighters, great gameplay! I cant believe we dont have games of this calibre anymore... In someways they are to graphics/technology intensive with no substance (i.e. Half Life 2)

Tie Fighter is the greatest PC game ever made, IMO. Nothing else compares. Can you beat having Darth Vader as a wingman?

"Do not issue orders to Lord Vader. Dark Lords of the Sith don't take well to being given orders."

Ohhhhhhhhhhhmannnnn... Lotsa nostalgia w/ X-Wing & Tie Fighter. That was basically all I played on my 80386 25mhz system! Haha!

Did anyone ever finish all the training missions in these games? I think I got through like, 3, then jumped right to the real missions and storyline. The Death Star mission on X-Wing was damn near impossible!
Good times. :p

x wing was the best game ever....that and doom2 on a 60mhz compaq, a the memories. My brother and I went through 5 joysticks beating x wing (and we figured out how to "hack" the pilots so we always had killer wingmen) and I think we acutally beat it

edit: and the code book :D

The one where you run laps around a course where you fly beneath an arc surrounded by turrets was kinda fun. By the end i was banging against the platform just to fit :p

I wasn't impressed with the B-Wing tho

I missed the old space combat games. Freespace 2 was badass and I enjoyed Wing Commander Prophecy. The only one in the Wing Commander series I really liked.

I see joysticks in the computer stores today and I think, WTF would you use that for? Theres nothing out there anymore.

I miss the Descent series and all the other space combat games.

Hehe... I just thought that it was funny how I saved the whole rebellion but just had ONE stripe (rookie) on my coat since I didn't really finish any of the training. :p

I liked the B-Wing expansion pack tho. The missions weren't as frustratingly impossible...

Anyone here ever play XF-5700 Mantis? Old school DOS game that came on floppies and had a CD with a "voice-pack" so you didnt have to read subtitles. :) The story was along the lines of Freespace, with two species at war and another superior one coming in and whooping ass.

Cool game.

Later!

Dont get me wrong, Freespace 2 was great... but it was kinda short. You get going and you like meh? Is this all there is?

What would you use a joystick for: Falcon 4 and various other flight & space sims. I have a CH F-16 Flightstick in like new condition I bought on clearance a couple years back, I'm getting ready to dust it off and play some of those old space sims.

People are still writing improvements for Falcon 4, "Super Pack 4" was released for it recently - I just dug up my old Falcon 4 CD, installed it and the latest patches. Looks pretty cool, it's just a matter of will I ever be patient enough to sit down and learn how to fly an F-16?

When it comes to Descent one controler stands out (way out) above all others: SpaceOrb 360. I still have mine, now I have to find some drivers for it ~ gack...

Still searching for FreeSpace 2 ~ I saw it sells for like $80 a copy on eBay, a bit too steep for me since I don't have much time to play it. I just want to play it a little bit once in a while unless I find I enjoy one of the other old space sims better...

What I REALLY want is a D3D version of X-wing & Tie Fighter. Lucas Arts should release them, both in one box with updated graphics & 3d sound support but exactly the same gameplay ~ "20th Anniversery Edition" or such... At least I can run the Star Wars arcade game under MAME at high res :)

I had the foresight to back it up on CD :p

Just how different is FreeSpace 2 from FreeSpace 1? I've only played the first one and i didn't get around to getting part 2. How different are the controls?

I only use my joystick to play Commanche4, and space sims. I prefer space sims to flight sims, mainly because there's no 'ground' for me to crash on :D

Me too. When i got the XWing vs TieFighter, which does run on windows. I went like "WTF did they do to the controls?!?!?!". I want a honest port of the original spacesims!

I found the training to be pretty fun . Once I started level 1 and went all the way to level 10 with an A wing. The trick was to adjust the power usage away from the shields and toward the blasters and engines then shift the energy back

Freespace 2 is still one of my favorite games ever. You must own it.

Especially with all of the mods you can download at http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/hlp/
Ok, which mods are "must have"? Are there some that are like service packs improving graphics and such? I'll take a look around there some more, hope to get time to install FS2 later this week...

ACTUALLY, Lucasarts made 32bit Windows compatible versions of BOTH X-wing and TIE fighter complete with D3D accelerated graphcis care of the XvT Engine. I have X-wing, but never got TIE fighter.

The newer space sims by Microsoft are not worthy of attention. They look pretty but don't even support joysticks out of the box. They are more of a story with flying in between (via a mouse).

Alliance wasn't bad. I preferred the older games but it had updated graphics and you could fly the M. Falcon which was cool.

Wow... I remember those! I was a good 6 years old when X-Wing was released. The thing I remember most, was the weird key system they used to use the game, and how you had to use the booklet. Does anybody remember this at all? I remember, my dad came up with some formula to crack it or something like that... I'll ask him about it later today. I can't remember much about it at all.

If I remember correctly, if you ran even those versions of the game in Windows XP, the D3D would not work for some reason and you had to play with software rendering. Am I wrong? I have both of those versions, by the way, and have never tried them on my Windows XP install...I only tried them on a Windows 98SE partition I installed just to play those games with D3D because of the problems I heard with Win XP and D3D.

I'd try it myself, but for the life of me I can't find my XvT or X-wing discs. I don't see why it WOULDN'T work unless it had really shoddy D3D coding (the XvT engine originally ran in software only mode and the Balance of Power expansion added 3D Acceleration.)

*sigh* I remember X-wing vs TIE's two disc set, one for you to play on, and one to give to a friend so he could play with you. I miss the good 'ol days of spawning copies for MP.

I think the Descent3 source code was released. I if had the know how I'd make a new game from it, but I don't so I'll sit here dreaming for now

There's a patch released recently to let 'em work on XP.

I just read that it's LEGAL (the company gave permission) for anyone to give a copy of Freespace 2 to their friends. I'll have to find the document and read it myself before I could know if that includes downloading it off P2P....
