I was seeing the drop in X99 gear, but some items are priced at x299 or 8700k.

That price is crazy high. Exactly. I can build a newer system with new board for that price.

That listing is expensive but its a hard to find board, its also the only mATX X99 board i'd call high end. Ebay is probably your best bet.
