WRT54G: compiling your own firmware

Has anybody tried doing this? I'm running FC2 (I'm a near-complete n00b, btw), and I can't seem to get it to compile correctly. I tried following their (linksys') directions to the T, but as I don't quite understand everything they say, I can almost guarantee I'm doing something wrong.
