I guess the deal is official now, the Woz has given his blessing on the Apple-Beats purchase, mainly because of the cool factor and the fact that he actually likes Beats headphones. There you have it, straight from the Woz.

He was happy to see Apple to see Apple getting back “to some cool roots” by picking up a brand that has a strong association with being cool.

although he also said that if he were picking up a set of headphones for personal use, he’d probably go with Beats over a company such as Skull Candy.
LOL, I'm not even sure what to make of that statement...

I don't remember even seeing Skullcandy headphones that much these days. Just googled them, and I didn't even know they were a public company (which has really tanked...).

What's really funny is reading the comments on the linked article. Hilarious Apple Fanboy douchery. They are literally arguing over who is/was cooler and who would not have made it without the other: the Woz or the Jobs.

I'd probably go with a punch to the face over a kick to the nuts. I wouldn't want either. :p

Translation: "epic fail"

(I love Woz for his neckbeardedness, but c'mon...if he embraces a purchase like this, it's pretty much an indication that you f'd up)

If it makes Apple money, it was not a mistake. Time will tell if the ROI is there or not. You don't make a purchase like this and expect it to pay for itself in the first year, or even five sometimes.

Getting rid of a possible streaming competitor b4 it even starts up, gaining access to a few entertainers it did not have b4, and adding in another product that is essentially flashy trash that sells, (Beats Headphones), may just have the ROI Apple is looking for.

Both of these companies are irrelevant to me (I don't buy their products), but Beats? It's a $30 headphone at best. Oh, wait......

The best explanation of the beats deal I have heard was from Robert Scoble on the Gillmor Gang podcast a few weeks ago. He said that Apple was going to incorporate sensors into the headphones as part of their new wearable technology which seems centered on health tracking.

The only other plausable explanations I have heard is that the deal pays for itself in 3 year, and/or it somehow strengthens Apple's position with the record industry. Perhaps it is Apple just starting to diversity just a little bit since Google & Facebook seem to buy other products/technologies quite a bit.

Sensors that will indicate to the wearer that the super bass boosted shit they are listening to is damaging their hearing right at that very moment? That would make too much sense.

Beats are the anti cool. They are as cool as Jordan's now.. which to say only avid collectors really give a shit. I respect Woz but sometimes he agrees with the strangest stuff.

I'd beat they found some way to stream music cheaper than how ever apple was doing it. Apple never buys stuff for the reasons their fan boys think. Every major purchase by apple was to get some technology or code base they did not want to license and let everyone know it worth money.

You obviously haven't been on a college campus lately. The 18-24 demographic eats this shit up.

This is Woz insuring his Apple stock doesn't drop in value.

No, he criticizes Apple a fair bit as well.

For some reason, the media has decided he is the leading independent expert on all things Apple (and technology in general).

Just look up every business decision Apple has made in the last 10 years or so, and somewhere you will find a journalist asking The Woz for his opinion on it.

Here is the [H] doing just that:

He's like a much mellower John C. Dvorak

Woz is normally dead on, but why is he comparing a $300 cans with a $100 cans.

I'm not saying he's wrong, but he either doesn't care about sound or he's decided cool looks are worth a hefty premium.

The obvious jib here would be that he is comparing headphones of like quality.

But that would imply Skullcandies could possibly be worthy of the price tag.

I actually couldn't name a $100 headphone that sounds as bad as Skullcandy. Grado, Sony, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Denon; all their $100 offerings are pretty decent.

Yet as soon as you get to your late 20's you realise you were anything but cool at that age.

Everyone 30 and over looks down on that age group with contempt.:D

My trouble with this is why not just oem you own headphones? So then it would be for the perceived brand which is what many have said already from day one the rumor hit.

They purchase them mainly for the ties to the recording industry, ability to pick popular trends/music, and finally streaming. Combine that with the brand imagine some were willing to pay a premium for...It may have simply been they had better terms for streaming then Apple could negotiate.

"Cool & Hip" is not a product or something you can buy on the market like a product...;) The people who think it is are the very people who are the least "cool & hip", obviously. It's highly amusing to think that a company would spend $3.2B trying to buy back its lost "cool & hip" public image! Apple shall always be the mirror image of "cool & hip"--close on the outside, but...backwards. It's like Google intending to "Do no evil." The thing is, if you are cool & hip, and you do no evil, you never, ever have to remind anyone about it.

You guys sure get upset when someone say something complimentary about beats.

Anyone else feel that "cool" is no longer "cool" anymore? It's now "sick" used to describe how awesome something is. Cool is out, sick is in.

Woz would have been better off saying "These are pimpin' headphones for your sick beats."

And here I thought "sick" went out with the 'aughts like "da bomb" went out with the 90's. I have no idea what the correct word is for "cool" these days.

On a side note, I know a guy who pretty much swears by the skull candy headphones. Not because they produce a quality sound, but because they don't break on him. He's been through dozens of different in-ear headphones, and they're the only ones who haven't broken on him. Me? I love my AKGs and Sennheisers!

That's because Beats is overpriced junk that's insanely popular only because of marketing hype and sheer ignorance of the target consumers. People that know what quality sound is are annoyed by the fact that these things sell so damned well when they're not worth a tenth of what they charge for them.

I have no problem with them selling well. As long as people are listening to their bass-thud crap through headphones instead of blasting it from automobiles, I'm fine with it. In fact, I adore Beats for that reason.

Maybe stop being so autismal about it and stop caring... just a thought.

How about using words that are actually in the dictionary? I don't speak Hipster.
To be fair, it is defined in the Urban Dictionary! :D

Seriously, though... There are enough words in the English language that equate to "nerd rage". There's probably a hundred words that equate to angry alone. I'm sure one of them is synonymous with irrational anger.

The urban dictionary fits so well with this forum:

Dude, you need to cut back on your autismal rage right now. If you prefer Coke to Pepsi, that's fine, but you don't need to get mad at the waitress, it's not her fault.

I been using Sennheisers since 07 and they haven't failed me yet.

Teens not in the know eat this shit up. And since they tend to be the ones who spend their money on stupid shit (not like us, who spend it all wisely on H&B), this makes sense to Apple.

Yep, it might be shit, but that shit is selling. At least for right now.

Mediocre quality hardware in a pretty package selling for way too much money? Sounds like a match made in heaven for Apple.
