-coffee shops, the obvious candidate, who wants to pay =(
-barber shop, sometimes the wait is a bit long, magazines just dont cut it.
-supermarket, would be nice to look up recipies on the spot
-hospital, waiting to actually get called in, waiting for friend/family when they do get called in (for routine check ups and what not)
-dentist office, same reasons as hospital

thats just off the top of my head.. anyone else have any other places where you wish you had wifi?
 
Airports! They have wifi at some, but you have to pay for it :(
Highways! So carputers can stream whatever they want + in car navs can get real time traffic data
 
some very cool ideas here. i love the supermarket recipe idea. the doctor's office waiting room thing will never fly though. they are designed as temporal torture devices, and allowing the victim to entertain themselves would negate their effectiveness ;)

I do that, actually, where I work ( large dental office ).

Of course, I only allow web access, no ssl. It's cool, you can check out web sites, but I don't want ANY liability on my network. :)
 
Jury duty waiting rooms! It's the least they could do to ease the boredom. Plus, it would allow a lot of people to keep up with their work correspondence, send/receive docs, so jury duty would be less of an inconvenience on employees/employers.

Last time I had jury duty, they did have one wired internet terminal there, but it cost something like $1 for every five minutes.
 
auto shops, it sucks having to sit there 2 and a half hours why your ac is being worked on with nothing to do. and no ride anywhere else
 
Eh, economics. I can see the hospital as a feasable place to get *free* WiFi as they make tons of money off insurance companies and patients, they can afford to pay for wide WiFi access. As for the dentist's office, a simple wireless connection through the office would work. Barbershop? I doubt it. Supermarket? It will come to allow you to check on the sites, etc. We have a Wal-Mart that is alloiwing internet access but only on their workstation/PC/mini-whatever-thing. Only prestigious and fancy coffee places and restaurants can afford to provide free wide WiFi access but other than that, I doubt even Dunkin Donuts would even find it feasible to pay for it.

40 dollars for a DSL line
40 dollars for an 11g AP.

MORE than covered by profit margins.
 
Considering it's a public business (hospitals and cafes, etc), their ISP company would charge them a hefty fee on top of just $40 dollars which is originally priced set for home users. This isn't "home". This is business. Note I also said "wide wifi access" which in this case a $40 dollars 11g AP wireless receiver won't do much of a job. Also, security comes into the factor. Firewalls, a main server, even hospitals have their own databases which they'd want hackers to NOT touch. It's pretty tough to set this type of wifi efficiently.

It would be nice to have wifi in heaven/hell. I mean, you'll be there for an eternity. An eternity without pr0n would really suck. ;)
