Aren't people walking around with those giant 5.5"-6" screens already making phone calls on a tablet? lol

Awe, people waking and texting with 2 hands on 10" tablets could be even funnier to watch.

Hope they have good insurance though.

Company my wife works is the epitome of an ideal hipster. Apple Air Books, Cloud Email/File Server, and using Google Phone to make/receive phone calls, and online video webinar/meetings. they do not own or have access to any physical phones, they have to receive/and make them on their laptops. They also have a wet bar in the vicinity of the work area.

If that's the only available device at the time then why not?

Even Apple is reinventing Google Voice and touting it as a feature to make/take calls on Mac desktops and laptops so what's the big deal about doing it on a tablet?

If a person can comfortably fit a Nexus 7 in their pocket they are wearing a suit jacket, huge ass cargo shorts sagging from the weight, or the largest jeans known to man kind.
Whatevs man, enjoy your man-cameltoe, but I'm going to keep my sperm count high with proper man-pants that can fit a Nexus. Actually, I guess just work'ish cargo pants would probably be fine, that way you have a dedicated pocket for it.

Throw on a belt and dress shoes and BAM, done.

No. I even get upset for some reason when I see idiots carrying tablets around sightseeing, holding them up to take pictures with. Seriously, that's your best device to take pictures with? Surely you're not just holding it up for the world to see to increase your e-peen.

Somehow I can actually picture you shouting "BAM" after pulling your nerd pants and shoes on.

Even though phone sizes continue to grow and blur the line between tablets and phones, no.
Sorry, I wear glasses and can't comfortably fit a bluetooth in or on my ear and no way I'm holding a 7"+ tablet to my head.
My LG Optimus G is almost too big to use one handed once I put a rubberized case on and I don't want something that takes 2 hands.

If my arm was torn off by a machine in an accident and my phone was in the hand of that arm.
Then, Yes.

If we could have multiple devices on one cell account with extra fees, sure!

If you are sitting there using your tablet and you want to make a speakerphone style call to someone, why not?

While I've never seen anyone be "spoke to" over dress code at work, anything that looks that "cargo-like" would definitely look out of place in my office, and would get the wrong type of attention.

I'm assuming you're using the cargo pocket because I would still laugh at you in those with a phablet obviously bulging in your regular pocket and then laugh even harder when you sat down. I wonder if having a device the size of a wifi router irradiating your nads at point blank range is what is giving you your unusually high sperm count?

Do people do that for normal day to day? I can see this for work where you may need to carry documents and other items. But normal people? Most people don't go anywhere with out their cell but on a normal day Is it like... "Hey honey gonna swing by Paul's house and check out his new bbq also we're out of milk I'll pick some up on the way home. If you can think of anything else we need at the store just call me. (Grabs messenger bag)"

No, they don't. But I always have mine on me because I hate carrying anything in my pockets. I normally have my keys, wallet, Note 3, Tab S, a camera, and a bottle of water in it.

Uh, i already do and can. I can facetime audio, and talk into a bluetooth earpiece, or use speakerphone, or actual facetime.

An earpiece on a tablet is fucking stupid unless you are shaq.

Its not a hardware issue, as wifi calling has existed on tablets forever. If you can do calls via internet, it doesn't matter if its wifi or 4G.

This can be purely fixed by a software update that provides you a keypad as far as I know, and in fact I'm pretty sure if I install Skype I'm good to go.

Based on the article, they're talking about voice calls over a cellular network. AFAIK, most, if not all, apps block voice calls over cellular data or use the voice radio in your phone.

They allow it over WiFi. For an iPad (just an example) to do voice, you'd need VoLTE or you'd need additional components in the tablet.

Its called device consolidation, and its the future!

In 1960s Star Trek, yes you had a single-purpose future device for every little thing you wanted to do, which was not a problem as long as you had a federation star ship available to beam all your shit to you when you need it, cuz Kirk sure as hell didn't have any pockets.

But in "awesome future", you have a multi tool that does everything from slice tomatoes razor thin to texting to watching 4K 3D porn to stabbing people in the face, and yes even taking a picture or two while you're doing that.

The Nexus 8 is supposed to have a 8 megapixel camera, which is fine for light duty. No need to carry around a DSLR if you're not being paid to photograph a wedding, or are trying to take pictures of chicks on the beach discreetly from 200 yards away.

I use speakerphone a lot so I'd have no problem making a call on a tablet. But a tablet just isn't as portable as a phone so it'd never replace that.

They need to make a tablet with a phone jack where you plug in a standard analog phone. That would be awesome. :D

Voice calls are why I own a phone. The problem with a tablet is not the way you make calls, it's the portability. Hands-free is really a moot point. A phone fits in my pocket comfortably, a tablet does not.

And let's be real...what are you more likely to do, walk around with a bluetooth headset paired to your giant tablet in your pocket all day waiting for a call to come in, or simply stick a smaller phone up to your ear when that call comes in?

Not sure why it is an either or ... nothing wrong with have options, just because a tablet has a feature does not force it to be used. Still just like cellphones eventually replaced PDAs, devices with Voip might eventually replace cellphones. Tablets should be able to make calls because it might be a useful feature to some.

So I realized that its virtually impossible to have a unique thought among a population of billions, and sure enough the han-nerd solo gear already exists (although I couldn't find a proper han solo buckle type as desired). They are just called drop leg bags!

I'll just stick to my regular loose fit cargo pants though, way cheaper and balls need to breath anyway.
No. My tablet is for games instead of making calls. And it is too large for calls.
This is what I use at my office. Going to have to tell my boss its unusable... I can't hold it to my head, and not sure how the speakerphone or headset functionality works. :p

Tablets can already make VOIP calls. That's not what this topic is about. It's asking if you would hold a tablet up to your face for a phone call, i.e. should tablets have the hardware (earpiece speaker at the top, mic at the bottom) to make traditional phone calls.

That's not how I interpreted the article at all, as holding it to your head is unimportant, and honestly quite inefficient and awkward using up a hand, holding your arm up, and tilting your head for extended periods.

Our tablets by and large for this market DO NOT come with a built in software interface for making calls and sending and receiving text the way that virtually identical but smaller screen "phones" do. They should come with regular green "phone" buttons with your keypad, logs, contacts, etc as they would on any phone, to be used over 4G or WiFi internet. You shouldn't have to go download a third party app for that IMO.
