i was all set to finally pick up a ps4 with the release of uncharted. but i figured i would wait until e3 to see what hardware changes were coming to the ps4. well that didn't happen. so now i am stuck on either waiting for the new hardware release or buying one now knowing a new one is probably right around the corner. i have held off this long and while i really want to get uncharted i am ok to wait.

I will consider it when GT7 comes out. But it doesn't look very good at the moment. GT7 that is.

No they announced a PS4K. Most games other then Bloodborne, Gran Torismo 7, and Uncharted 4 should be hitting PC eventually. Recent Final Fantasy games have been release on PC so expect FF 15 and 7 remake to be released for PC just a bit later.

it's the same as when a new GPU is set for release...the old card is still good but the new one is better...PS4 old will still be a solid console but I'd probably wait for Neo for the better graphics

Buy one used now and ditch it when the Neo actually gets games that take advantage of it.

Even Uncharted 4 doesn't interest me enough to buy a PS4.

The only reason I would done so already disappeared last month.

There aren't enough console exclusives on any system to make any of them worth it. Save I suppose for Nintendo if you want to play Nintendo specific games.

People are already listing the games. God of War 4, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne.... and that's about it. Unless you need something to play Blu-Rays now I would just hold off. PS4.5 also may or may not be worth waiting for for the same problem... lack of games. But waiting doesn't hurt you.

I'm gonna pick a neo up rather than regular simply for the reason the better apu I don't care how Sony assures us all the experience of the two will be the same with the exception that the neo can scale shit to 4k...

The difference will be faster load times less power draw cooler operation smoother overall experience and more stable fps at all resolutions. Then in 3-6 months post launch the restrictions on how the power can be used will be lifted and maybe neo exclusives.

But it has games you are talking like this is a new gen console that has never been what they planned. This is a hardware revision nothing more the same as releasing a "slim" version. The neo is a ps4 with 4k upscaling and a new apu it will play all the ps4 titles currently out...

Definitely not. As a PC gamer, I only own 3-4 PS4 games and they're all exclusives. While some are great (Uncharted collection for instance), holding out for the Neo seems like a better idea.

The Neo is going to do more than simply upscale. Games are going to have to have two compatibility levels to run on both the Ps4 and on the Neo.
The Neo is supposed to offer greater fidelity, resolution, and frame rate.

This is far from a "slim" version which is just a die shrink.

Even with that knowledge it doesn't matter if there aren't enough titles to make it worth it. There is maybe a dozen AAA titles to play. Less when you consider that not every genre or gameplay style is preferable to everyone. It's hard to recommend any current console when they don't offer much value.

I personally don't think the PS4 is worth it based on what currently is on the market. But in fairness I feel that way about the XB1 as well. The Neo will carry all the old PS4 games, but without any games it doesn't matter.

Of course you're welcome to a differing opinion. But a $350 console with 3-4 games doesn't make much sense to me. And at this point they are 2 years in.

I would wait for the Neo. My ex got me a PS4 for Christmas and other than Bloodborne, Destiny, and the occasional game of Need For Speed, it never gets turned on. Haven't even taken it back out of the box since moving a couple months ago.

Why is it you only play the exclusives? is it because of the effin 30 fps? I know it is for me. 30 fps suck!

Not according to sony accodring to sony the neo was supposed to do 1 thing 4k up scaling they are using a restriction on developers...

    Sony has said
    1. no game will be exclusive to the new console. Games will have an 'enhanced' mode that will improve the graphics on the upgraded version, but they still have to work on normal PS4 consoles.
2.games launched in late September will require patches to provide performance improvements for the new hardware, and any software launched in October and beyond will require native support for the new hardware, according to these documents.

What i get from that is the devs will have 2 graphics profiles on the games one with things like FAA and other settings turned up perhaps higher textures and the other whatever they need to run the game at to get minimum acceptable operation out of it since the games will be required to work on both similarly I imagine the game development will be targeted for the regular ps4 then the settings they would like to have used on the neo.

Like i said it IS NOT A NEW CONSOLE but an upgraded ps4 this means the library of games the ps4 has currently is the same library it is running now and all that is required to allow for the "enhanced mode" is a patch they could even go back to a ps4 launch title and patch that with a new graphics profile for the neo...

The days of exclusives are slowly dying and the pc gaming will take over...

    We agree.
But your first statement was that this is a "slim" hardware revision. It is clearly not.

This contradicts your earlier statement of the Neo being a slim console model revision. This is what I was stating. The Neo revision isn't "minor".

Compatibility across the two consoles cannot be minimized. I'm not certain how you can out of one side of your mouth speak to all the enhancements the Neo brings but then out of the other side minimize what that will do for a prospective game players experience.

Please read what I wrote. I only suggested people not bother with a PS4 now, because there aren't enough titles to make it worth it. You may as well wait for the Neo, get the better hardware and hopefully have more titles to make owning a PS4.5 more worth it.

They don't have any exclusives that really catch my eye. The only reason I buy consoles is for exclusives now (ie Zelda & Nintendo consoles)

Buy a used one for now.
Personally I'd buy an upgraded Playstation 4 in a heartbeat, even though I own the current model. Tons of people seem to think this more aggressive upgrade cycle (if it comes to pass) would be a negative for consoles, but as long as the new model plays older games, and new games typically support the newer and older models as far as possible I don't really see a problem?

Correct, although also simply because the PC versions of everything = better. Even the worst PC ports still look/run better than their console brethren and they're $10 cheaper to boot.
Granted, much of that varies on the type of PC you have, but mine can crush damn near anything. The only console games I've purchased this entire generation have been exclusives, and there are only about half dozen of them.

If you can find a used one for cheap go with that, if not wait for the ps4k. I have a ps4 and Xbox one and got both for half of msrp from a pawn shop (go to good ones that gaurentee they work for at least a month).

I love my gaming computer but hacks are becoming such an issue on the pc fps scene that I buy my fps games on console and others on pc, just get a xim4 so you can continue to use mouse and keyboard on the ps4 and its awesome lol

I wish i hadn't. I only use it for playing NBA 2k when friends are over. Other than that, it just sits around collecting dust. I seem to see them going for cheap in the after market though

I can't play multiplayer FPS anymore. They're either too unreliable on PC or too boring (CS is nearly two decades old). Using something like the XIM4 seems like hacking in its own way especially with the aggressive auto-aim of most console shooters, and you can't tell if someone else is using one either.

Its really not that huge an advantage over a controller, I won't say it's not at all but it doesn't make you God like and the auto aim in games actually hinder the xim not help lol. I see it as no different than a fight stick for fighting games or a steering wheel for racing games imo.

What everyone else has said. I played Destiny (shitty), PvZ:GW and some other free titles, then console sat collecting dust for many months, recently got division ("ok" but now dead), and now it collects dust again. I expected more worthwhile titles by now, all the SP ones I'm going to end up borrowing from friends/relatives and play 'whenever'.

Wait for the Neo and actual titles that compel your purchase

PvZ:GW is the best Frostbite Engine game out there. Beyond the kiddie look is a solid TF2/Objective based 3rd person shooter. It also proves that DICE/EA are god damn liars when they claimed that the engine wasn't "easily moddable". Put ~300hours into it.

I bought a ps3 just before the ps4 came out just for the ratchet and clank series and gt5. So to the op's question, I'm waiting until it's a little over $100 before picking it up with the exclusives that I wanted and also reviewed well than flip it back out.

now that we have this information, is the pro worth it if you don't have a 4K display? i am running one of the last 70" panasonic plasmas that i love and don't see a 4K in my near future... i dunno, something in me will probably refuse anything but the higher end model just for future proof.

    *edit* Just read this:
""But you don't need a 4K TV or HDR TV to experience the benefit of PS4 pro," Cerny explained. Even on a standard HD TV, games will look better on the PlayStation 4 Pro. Super-sampling and advanced anti-aliasing will take the jagged edge off of games that are pushing the standard hardware to its limits. Even at 1080p, games will feature better reflections and brighter colors. Older titles like Paragon, Infamous First Light and Shadow of Mordorare all scheduled to receive high-fidelity graphics patches too, in what Cerny calls "forward compatibility.""

I think the PS4 Pro is a harder sell to those who have a PS4 already. Going in fresh, IMO, it's a no brainer, even without a 4k TV. There will still be benefits for 1080p players. Tomb Raider is a good example of what will be possible. You will be able to choose between 4k/30fps, 1080p/60fps, or 1080p/30fps with enhanced graphics. So not only do you get a better experience, you get the freedom to choose whether you prefer visuals or FPS. I'm sure not all games are going to follow this model but you may see games that shoot for 1080p/30 on the base console and 1080p/60 on the Pro. Or games that are 30fps regardless but look better on Pro (this is the approach Mass Effect appears to be taking). Bottom line is your experience will be better and I don't think the cost difference is out of line.

Well, for the sheer fact they are working (supposedly) on The Last of Us 2 already... Btw, you forgot to mention God of War next to Uncharted and Gran Turismo. And, idk about the rest of you but Days Gone looks amazing.

OP, if you have a 4K TV then get a PS4 Pro. If you don't then get a regular PS4. The sale prices nowadays are insane. I saw a Uncharted 4 bundle the other day for $299. That's a great price for a game that is still $60 and one of the best games i've played all year.
