Looking to build a cheap rig coming up in the next few weeks.

I have previously ran an AMD x2 4800 paired with an 8800GTS 320mb, 2 gb g skill ram, and ASRock mobo, and it was a perfect setup for me. Just recently sold everything, and have an itch to build another rig.

What I plan on buying is an Phenom 9600, 4 gb G Skill ram DDR2 800 ( Ram and CPU are a combo deal ) Asrock A780g mobo, and either a 4850 or 9800gtx. Trying not spend more than $350 and everything comes to just $360 shipped.

Mainly going to be for gaming, website development/photoshop and some video editing.

So just kinda wondering if itd be a worth while upgrade to purchase a slower quad or purchase a faster dual core?

Thanks

As I stated in my OP, can only really spend 350 max.. shouldnt even be that much... Specially with Xmas coming soon.. (Just really been itching to play some pc games)

And I would love to have a decent Intel setup, but I'll prolly wait to build an intel system till the new i7's drop to a reasonable price.

But thanks

np i'm in the same boat but unfortuantly my budget is 280 so I'm gonna buy the board/ram/cpu. i will stick with my 6600gt for now:(

prolly gonna keep my 19in Acer so 1440x900.

GTA4, CS:S, Fall out 3, COD 4, COD WaW...

It looks like a quadcore Intel is out of your budget. No worries, a dual core intel will outperform that quadcore AMD, lol. E7300 FTW! (using sathsayins other parts)

Let's go with this setup man.

CPU/Video - Intel Core 2 E7300 + EVGA Geforce 9800GT Dual Slot($20 MIR) both for $222.98
RAM - 4gig G. Skills DDR 2 1000 for $45 w/free shipping
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-EP43-DS3L for $80

Boom ---> $347.98 before shipping & rebates

O/C this E7300 and it will dust that Phenom 9600

Hey i was curious the reason i picked that graphics card was becasue it had 640 stream proccesors the 9800gt had only 112 was i wrong in thinking it would blow that 9800gt away? I may need to rethink and do some more reading before i upgrade?

You don't compare ATI's shaders to NV's. My experience with the Phenom 9600 was terrible, utterly terrible. It can't overclock worth anything and runs hot. Also performs badly even with TLB turned off. Switching to an Athlon 5800 gave me noticeable performance boost even just running desktop crap.

They perform about the same, AFAIK. The architecture differs between the two GPUs, so you can't simply look at specs. You must also look at performance reviews.

What about just spending on the video card and dealing with the mobo/CPU later, seeing you're budget constrained and every dollar "saved" is money in your pocket?

NM, you sold all that stuff. e5200 for even less money.
