Looking for love on an Internet dating site? It may be a good idea to carry Mace or a Taser with you on those dates. Things didn’t go so well for a Las Vegas woman when her Match.com date stabbed her 10 times while off on a date with her perfect match.

In her official complaint, Beckman says that Match.com misrepresented the idea that the "site was safe, consistently lead[ing] to loving relationships, and was comprised of individuals seeking healthy relationships."

Stupid money grab, nothing more.

Sorry she hooked up with a psychopath and got stabbed, not Match.coms fault and the case should be thrown out.

Too bad she doesn't know how to read.

Soo... if it's her perfect match, does this mean she's also a knifey stab stab kind of person?

I don't know,if the courts decide Match.com misrepresented how safe and reliable their service is,they may be in trouble. If you see their commercials, they make it seem as they're an infallible service run by Cupid himself. You'd think their screening process could at least weed out homicidal maniacs. People have won with flimsier cases than this.

Beckman joined the online service in August 2010 and met her "match," Wade Ridley, a month later. After several online conversations and 10 days of dating, she decided to end the relationship. Beckman claims Ridley sent threatening texts to her days after the break-up and in January 2011, hid in her garage with a knife, then stabbed and kicked her "several times in the head until she 'stopped making the gurgling noise.'" The force he used was so strong that it caused the knife to break, Beckman said in court documents.

I'm not seeing how Match.com has anything at all to do with this event. . .

Match forced him to hide in her garage via secret telepathic messages transmitted by stealthy unmanned aerial cupid units.

I bet the judge awards her millions anyway.

Sad but true. No personal responsibility in life anymore...it will always be:

1. The Man's fault (business, organization, etc)
2. Religion's fault
3. My up bringing/environment (I didn't know it was dangerous,illegal,etc)

Ain't nothing' to it, [placeholder] made me do it.

Maybe she was just really annoying?

I hope you are kidding. She decided to end the relationship and he then sent threatening texts and hid in her garage and stabbed her. And somehow that's her fault? While I agree that match.com is not at fault for this, your comment is quite rude.

It's been happening to guys for years, especially if they are stupid enough to meet off of Craigslist. The whole date is setup to have the guy get robbed while walking to the woman's front door. Several have been stabbed some shot.

My guess is her profile listed her as 33 with an Athletic Body but when he met her she was a big fat 50 year old hurting. So he stabbed her.

Pro Tip. THEY ARE ALL OLD FAT HURTINGS!

This is why people should date via Craigslist instead. It's lots safer since only nice people use Craigslist.

Urm....
Just HOW are they supposed to do that?
What sort of Nanny State society do you want to live in?

You might give this a listen and some thought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk8kM6ivaOo

Are you people going to throw out buzzwords like "nanny state" every time someone has some kind of responsibility?

People in this thread are saying that Match has some kind of background check system ensure that dangerous people don't use the service. Considering that Match is an elective service, wouldn't you expect them to keep people like this dude from using Match?

How exactly do you propose they would screen for "dangerous people"?

If there were such a thing, I'm pretty sure we'd use it EVERYWHERE, right? I mean, let's screen these obviously dangerous people right out.
Of course we can't, because it's not possible. Think about how many serial killers or other nefarious people have been described as "shy, quiet, kept to himself" or "very nice, charismatic, the last person in the world you'd expect to do something like this".

It's a fun thought to think you can somehow point them out, but you can't. And if you start screening people out, get ready for THOSE lawsuits claiming defamation of character.

The only position Match can reasonably take is hands-off, with a big disclaimer (that they do have) that you're responsible for yourself. Just like the rest of life.

You obviously can't screen all dangerous people, but I think the point here is whether they should or shouldn't do background checks and either exclude or inform others based on that. I'm struggling to follow the actual order of events, but the dude has been accused of several other violent acts, if that was known before the event in question, should match.com have been doing background checks to weed him out? The website already screens for sex offenders after someone claimed they were raped.

This. Look, the point is,most people just don't read the fine print on sites like this. It might be foolish, but it's human nature, most just go by the commercials. And services like this know that. If this maniac has a prior record and Match.com missed it,they could end up paying for it.

Slippery slope argument, I'm NOT saying we should use it everywhere, and I'm not saying we should use a person's personality. It's called a criminal record. People with a criminal record should be kept from using a service like match, and if they do all the other users should see giant warning signs telling them.

What I'm saying is reasonable, I think you'd want these kinds of protections if you were using the service.

I'd think that if I was using this service I'd be aware that I'm trusting an awful lot that someone is representing themselves as the want to be seen...and that someone can have a clean psych eveal and never had a criminal charge on their record...and still by absolutely bonkers.

Well, she's probably a real bitch (proven by her suing Match.com) so maybe the guy had a good "crazy person reason" to stab her in the first place? I'll just chalk this up as a screwed up moron meeting a screwed up violent offender.

If I was using the service, I'd probably know that there's NO F'ING WAY a company can promise a 100% safe experience while interacting with other people. The company has no way to discern a dangerous person versus one that isn't, and can't predict the probability of them becoming violent in the future.

A criminal background doesn't tell you everything. A lot of these types of checks don't tell you everything. Nothing can.

Maybe there's a new niche service though with this thinking. A dating website that does full background checks, financial inquiries, legal proceedings, etc so you get a full disclosure of the individual before dating them, and maybe an armed escort for the first few dates? Sure, a monthly subscription would probably cost $400-500 a month, but at least there would be some assurance of the type of person you're dating.

But that ain't in Match.com's TOS now is it?

I'll go on record and state I think the case has no merit and she'll get nothing, unless Match.com decides to settle. If it goes to trial, it'll be a jury trial, and thus will not be decided by a judge (appeals not withstanding).

All of you saying this is a sign of the downward spiral of society, you sound like Grandfather did at 70 (or perhaps your great grandfather).

Does Match.com have a "stabiness" dimension of compatibility?

It should...

I always think it would be fun to make joke profiles and see who you get matched to... :D

"Likes walks on the beach and filming snails, though this is difficult because I believe that my right eye is evil. I spend most of my time protesting camera companies to allow me to use my good eye, but they purposefully make the cameras to be right eyed. Although I could use my good eye, it just feels wrong."

"What a curious question. Well, I enjoy moonlit nights, taking long walks on the beach, knitting and unicorns. In fact, I once took a seaside stroll, on a moonlit night, and discovered a unicorn... which I proceeded to stab in the throat with a crochet needle. I'm a woman of refined, yet simple tastes."

"You seem like a nice woman of child bearing age and ability.

May I inquire as to if your hips are wide? I do not believe in cesarian birth. When I say I don't believe in it, I mean I don't think it actually happens. Any woman I have ever stabbed to remove something from within has died. Therefore, medical experts would not be so foolish to attempt this, especially with much less training than me.

5 years from now I shall be ex-special forces. My application is "pending". Mother has been saying for years it has been accepted, but the 90s were a strange time for her. I wish she has worn things more in my size"

Blind dates are usually incredibly awkward. Frankly, I'm not at all surprised this one ended with someone getting stabbed. It's just a clever way to cut the date short.

Are you people going to throw out buzzwords like "nanny state" every time someone has some kind of responsibility?

And when are people like you going to stop clamoring for a magical fix for all the possible dangers in this Big Scary World? Like Watts says, 'Risk is the price of life.' Dude, you're gonna be dead in so many decades anyway. Do you really want to spend your years fretting and worrying about every possible Bad Thing that might happen to you?? Grow up and get on with the business of living!

Again, How? How? and ... How?

And... are you willing to pay several times more for a 'keep me safe!' service?

While I have zero sympathy for the Marketing Monkeys and the flowery BS they spew, Match's TOS clearly spells out that they are NOT in the Nanny business.
