So I leave from work early so I can level up my Mage in Wotlk. Only to find that my account has be "hacked" again, and Blizzard is closed for the holiday.

What would cause me to have my password stolen 2 times in 2 weeks? Virus? I don't use any virus scanners since I find them annoying.

Happy Thanksgiving :(:)

That would be it. At least you are willing to say it. I don't know how many times you hear "I dont run an AV program because im uber careful on the web and only go to trusted sites bla bla bla". You are bound to get a virus sooner or later.

Go for a low profile scanner like NOD32 (very very popular with gamers). I would also invest $6 into an authenticator. 2 passwords in 2 weeks? Yikes... I have been playing for over 3 years now and have never, not once, had my account hacked. And YES I do run an anti virus program... and YES I have had it catch several trojan keyloggers from "trusted" sites and from emails from "trusted" people.

This person is wise and speaks the truth..... and honestly, NOD32 is so unobtrusive, you can run it "straight out of the box" if you wish and you won't even know it is there.... unitl it detects a nasty, that is.

I suggested NOD32 to a friend who had Norton. He said it is like having a new PC as it has freed up his resources to a great extent. Get it and you won't be sorry, it is well worth the money.

Some malicious code on your machine, a virus or something written specifically to steal passwords.

Install a free virus scanner and give that a go, if you can't find anything then its probably something custom written and you might want to completely format/restore your PC.

Yea I had AVG get rid of a bunch of viruses that it found, but it won't get rid of the most obvious "Antivirus 09" Trojan.

I leave early from work and miss out on money that I need, to come home to hacked wow account and Trojans. :(

WoW just WoW.

Had to say it.

I noticed that most previously hacked people I spoke to that a lot of them had at one point or another tried out bots or other such "no no" software for WoW. I thought it was kind of random at first all the people who were getting their accounts hacked, so I asked a couple I knew trying to find something in common. Sure enough they had tried a bot or attempted to install a bot at some point in the past, whether it functioned or not...it seemed to snag their password at some point.

I think when that happens the only thing keeping the guy from getting into your account immediately is not knowing your account name, because you don't have to type it in much unless you login under different accounts or enter it in a form once it's set to save your account name on login.

Take the couple of days that they are closed to reinstall windows and all that. Download all the patches and things you are gonna need.

Only way to be 100% sure there are no more viruses/keyloggers/etc.

Also if you surf the wow boards a lot, consider using a laptop or 2nd computer for that. Those things are so filthy with keyloggers lately.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Well dude....No way to say this without being rude.....but you got what you deserved. Honestly....and you say this isnt the first time either. Bro??!!??!! WTF were you thinking? You've been a member here at the [H] for 4.2 years, you really REALLY should have known better. If you were in my presence, Id pop you upside the head.

NOD32 man. Get it, USE IT!!!! You can download it from their site and they also give you the option to have them send you the disc for it too. GET IT!!!! Cause once you reinstall, your NOT going to want to go online without it already being installed on your system.

Its non-obtrusive to gaming in the least. I have it running all day every day, gaming or not. NEVER NEVER EVER turning it off. All the games ive ever played and still play run as though im not using it at all. It doesnt slow things down, it doesnt cause any lag. TF2 runs smoothly and back in the day when I did play WoW, I used it then too...no problems in the least.

Are you going to learn your lesson this time?

Learn from your stupidity dude...Common man, your an [H] member for god sake....you shame us all with your stupidity. Be the [H] that you are, GET NOD32 so this doesnt happen again.

also, do you use mods? I have mods that wern't picked up by my AV that still stole my password. Someone kept tryign to log in while I was playing. they did it 3 times each time wiht me changin the password.

I deletd my recent added mods and never happened again.

Um, no. Mods (in-game mods) run in LUA and aren't running until after you are in-game, so there is no way a mod can steal your password unless you do something like type your password into the game chat interface. A mod could be written that captures text that you type in-game and send that to someone else, but that's about it.

What probably busted you here was using something like the Curse updater or another executable that you run before you run WoW. But that isn't a mod. Curse has been the entry point for so many keyloggers and virii...

ahh that could be it, cause I got the mod from curse and that was the same time I got curse. Either way deleting them all seemed to fix it.

I had my account hacked once. I clicked on a link (when they still had links) on the WoW forums that I shouldn't have. A few days later I tried logging in to find my account had been banned for spamming. None of my chars was damaged, but there were a number of L1s on other servers I had never played on.

I was using Trend Micro at the time, and it found and eliminated the keylogger, but not in real time, only upon a later scan. I've since rebuilt the system, and am now using Windows Live OneCare along with a stronger password and the Authenticator. I've not had the problem since.

OneCare seems to work fine. I like the unobtrusive interface that automates everything without sucking up system resources, and it seems to do a good job of finding things. Over the last two days I have been surfing to a lot of "questionable" web sites, and it has caught and eliminated two Trojans in real time, so I feel pretty safe.

What do they say, on average an unprotected computer is compromised within 8 minutes of connecting to the net? I wouldn't surf without some form of protection.

I don't use seatbelts and I never had a car crash...
Don't rolleyes me with your poorly thought out analogy. Seat belts don't prevent you from getting in a car crash while AV does prevent you from being targeted by viruses and key loggers. Being smart about where you download software from, what you install, and your router and firewall set ups can all be good alternative to AV. I go to tons of websites and use downloads from a lot of places I've never heard off and I'm still in the clear, maybe I'm just incredibly lucky? I think it's also humorous that some computers I work on have viruses while having AV software, BUT OH WAIT I THOUGH THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE THEY USE AV.

Uh, no! AV doesn't prevent you from being targeted. It prevents your computer from being "injured" once you have been targeted.

BTW,.

I don't use AV and I've never had an account stolen from me EVER.

Yet....You havent had an account stolen....YET!!!!

Whats the deal anyways? Just use it and be safe. When "that" time comes and you do get hacked, your going to be pissed....PISSED. All your precious programs, game saves, important photos can all be gone in a matter of seconds. What are you going to do then? Make your own "Woe's Me" thread?

So, go ahead, continue to not protect your stuff, while your at it, why dont you just take the locks off your door and leave a sign out front "PLEASE, PLEASE ROB ME".

For that matter, why dont you go ahead and tell us where you live, address, city, state??? Hmmmm.

If you dont care about your personal belongings and work you have done, let me have it then. I await your reply.....

All you're going ot find on my comp is bear porn.

I'm going 5 years or so without an AV and been playing WoW since release, I research WoW like no other (read: click a ton of links) and never had my account stolen or had a virus. Only thing I run is my router firewall just for peace of mind, and Spybot S&D that I run once every couple of weeks and it never finds anything.

I don't know what you're doing to keep getting infected, but whatever it is.. I feel bad for you for being so naive as to click/download whatever you are clicking/downloading.

Viruses don't just pop on your computer one day randomly, you're bringing them on by clicking a link.

I AM TEH RET?

post pix of your wifes naked, u like?

WRONG!!!
Even legitimate sites gets target by malisious scripts, only a *beeeep* dosn't run AV these days...

Thanks for being part of the problem.

Not to mention all the emails you open from other people who aren't as savy.. you know you have a couple of them in your family.. the ones who actually follow the links to FREE XBOX 360!

Sorry, I don't recall ever getting infected by a virus from visiting [H] one evening, or google, or gmail, or joystiq, or kotaku, or woot, or chase, or newegg. The only example I can think of was that one time when an iPod firmware was internally infected with a virus that wasn't even harmful, and that's about it, and if you own an iPod, you deserve it IMO :p

What's your definition of a legit website? www.sex4free.com? www.freewowbots.cx? Yeah, you need an AV.

You're the reason Norton is still in business.

I could post many more, but why bother...it's people like you that is the problem

As I already said before....You may not have gotten a virus YET, but seriously, your playing with a loaded gun without having any armor (the net being the gun, AV being the armor, in case you couldnt understand my metaphor).

Its not a question of IF you get hit, but WHEN.....and it WILL happen, eventually.

Why the hell am I even bothering with this thread, I must be talkin to 13 year olds or something, think they are invincible and know everything.....

I leave this thread with these last words.....One day, LIFE is going to slap you right in the face and your going to wonder WTF happened....

Done...
