Wired is telling us that Far Cry 5 is nothing more than an illusion of a video game. And after I wasted my time reading this tripe, I was reminded of just how stupid I was to click over to Wired for anything video game related. The butthurt that Far Cry 5 keeps churning up leaves me wondering why folks can't check their politics at the door when it comes to a friggin' game. Next people will be butthurt about boobies. Oh wait, too late.

That said, Far Cry 5 is not perfect, but it surely does run well on a lot of hardware and look great while doing it.

Far Cry 5 Funniest Glitches Video.

From a distance, you would be forgiven for thinking that Far Cry 5, a game that advertised itself with charged imagery of patriotism and white supremacy run amok, would have something to say. Instead, it has nothing to say and offers the player little of interest to do. The only mildly compelling part of the game is its ending, and by then it's far too late to redeem the prior 20 hours spent wandering around a hall of mirrors.

So, they didn't actually review the GAME.

They just pissed and moaned about the politics.

I really don't understand why people can't just enjoy things for what they are. Isn't that the point of reviewing things? I never read reviews anymore b/c they're a waste of time and at the end of the day are just a single person's opinion, but a game should be enjoyed for what it is. Does it do what it set out to do, and does it do it well? You can't complain about story when a game has never been much about the story. In a open-world sandbox game like FarCry all you need is a motivation to keep going. Like; oh this bad guy is really bad and he captured my friends and I really want to get them back. That's the motivation behind Far Cry 3 and 5. Does the incentive to do optional things outside the main story warrant exploring? To further upgrade my skills; sure.

Far Cry games have for me always done one thing well, which is make a fun open-world shooter. That's why I buy Far Cry games at launch b/c the formula for Far Cry is a winner in my book. Not all open-world games can hook me... like Mad Max or something. But Far Cry does what it does great. Great gameplay, satisfying weaponry, great graphics, great controls, and generally fun. I can appreciate the setting of Far Cry 5 and I love the religious/cult aspect to it, but if folks were expecting a expose on cults then they looked in the wrong place... go watch that HBO Scientology documentary if that's what you wanted.

I loved Far Cry 1 and 2... didn't play any of the others - this past weekend I bought FC5 and played through opening acts until it unlocked multiplayer. Multiplayer mode is accessed by going into the arcade in FC5 - Very different and in my opinion, a total afterthought (awful) - This is the first game ever where I applied for a refund (valve was great and processed the refund).

If you play Far Cry for the single-player story mode, then you may like new FC5.

It seems gone are the days of (new) dedicated hosted games where can buy a game server and host own server or clan - what shame...

Have you not played a multiplayer game in, like, the last 8 years?

Incursions Alpha, BF1 CTE, Black Squad, Day of Infamy (beta), 7 Days to Die (alpha/beta), Burstfire (beta), Crysis 3 (beta, though just played few rounds of released version), Rising Storm 2 (beta), along with a new of others - a bit of COD WWII play on the side (many friends that play)... so ya, I've played a good amount in the last 8 years, though mostly alpha or beta (ahead of public release in many cases), and no I haven't played public released games like I used to.

Great comment above that FC is an open world shooter... that was exactly why I loved FC1 - FC5 multiplayer is far from an open world FPS - Its another run of the mill mosh pit style shooter and at that a half-hearted effort...

Maybe Far Cry 5 would be a better game if it had more boobs...

I note that the Wired author is a woman and presumably a feminist and a progressive. Could it be because she bears hostile feelings towards gun loving redneck (and the enemy of my enemy is my friend) she identifies with the "Peggies"? Could it be she views this game as a battle between the right and the left? Could it be she is uncomfortable identifying with the bad guys?

The fact that progressives seem offended by this game makes it all the more enjoyable.

you wanna see real tears?

if far cry 5 was set in south africa and you were a farmer defending your land.

that review was stupid and i feel i'm owed the time it took to read it back.

and just for fun a little bit of re-writing history.

Ignoring that the culture of doomsday prepping is largely motivated in real life by xenophobia and a paranoid fear of gun control, that its champions are not folk heroes but men like the Bundys, this game has built a world where these preppers and pretend soldiers are heroes.

i do believe the bundy's were justified in their actions were they not?

i feel dirty reading that.

Funny thing is that I thought it was painting the preppers as illiterate hicks that needed the Deputy to save them and all their prepping for was not...

Despite the attacks by the press, Far Cry 5 is the fastest selling entry in the series and Ubisoft's second biggest launch to-date, only outdone by The Division.

There was a time that attacks by the press were attacks by the press. Now its just a man or woman banging a pot on their head with a wooden spoon, trying to drive traffic to the site that pays them to type words from home.

The time to make hay and try to stir up controversy was before the game came out and nobody knew what its politics really were. Now that the game is actually out, the attempts at trying to stir up political controversy in a game that turns out to have none just comes across as lazy and late to the party.

I remain constantly fascinated by press that feels a Far Cry game didn't do something socially progressive with its story.

And I love that the developers continue to go completely over the top to upset them, with quests requiring you to repeatedly run over Bison in a big ass truck and take their meat, drive over cattle in a thresher, etc.

This seems like with any other game, the group being used for the setting of the game is the only ones that see its inaccuracies. When you are fighting in south africa, russia, iran, or vietnam then we just play it as a game and think nothing of the stereotypes. When it is picking on the stereotypes of us white folk, then we get vocal about how it isn't correct. Games never get it perfect, it is designed for entertainment, not historical accuracy.

Videos games aren't illusions. You are actually controlling real people in a another part of our multiverse.

Also, has the journalist ventured outside her gated community to see some of these types of places in America? Just because you can't find info after a few minutes on google, does not mean anything. Unless she has extensive experience with cults, where do her facts come from?

A game like this needs a fictional enemy, so they created one. I don't understand the problem. If fiction isn't your thing, that is fine, then don't review things you don't understand. I don't enjoy football at all, so I am pretty sure no one would care to read any opinions I would have on it. Though, we did all go to her page and read that so we validated her work :(

Definitely a feature in newer games that I hate.

Yea that is up their with me right next to needing multiple head shots or a boss having inhuman immunity to bullet damage. You know, shotgun to the eyeball and it only ticks off 5% health.

You ever been talking to a group of people and say something like, "You know, I really don't agree with some of the things Black Lives Matter stands for." And one person in the group goes, "Exactly, someone needs to teach those n*****s a lesson!"

med1kl is that guy.

What's with the gushing about how the game looks? Sure there are some vistas that look great. Upon closer inspection it falls apart.

Performance is good because:

Terrible use of mipmaps. Textures, especially roads look a blurry mess not that far from the player. Many textures themselves are lower res than I expected for a AAA game in 2018.

Very short LOD draw distance. Both for small details and NPCs + vehicles. Underbrush vegetation pops in very close to player. Use your binocs. Look at bushes and trees at default zoom. Many are flat, almost sprite like.

Shit AI. Absolute shit in every way.

I wouldn't say it's well optimized. There's just not much going on.

I like the game. Play on ultra @1440 with 1080Ti. Lighting is good. Generally underwhelming graphically.

Your comment is strange for two reasons. 1; you mentioned you loved Far Cry 1 and 2 which had no multiplayer. Yet, you refunded Far Cry 5 because you didn't like the multiplayer. I'm confused. What were you expecting from it going in? 99.99% of people play Far Cry for the SP and/or Co-op.

Also, I haven't played Far Cry Arcade but in no way was it an afterthought. People are straight rebuilding other games inside of Far Cry Arcade. Like somebody remade de-dust2, and even a Last of Us themed map...

It is really quite interesting and i'll give it a shot once I am done with the SP.

Zero mention of how the game forces you to pick a female or male avatar at the beginning and then tells you that once you make a selection you cannot change it later... this game is so out of touch with reality.... you should be able to change gender anytime on the fly.... Ubisoft should just shut their doors.

No it should cost you thousands of in game currency, require you to take regular medications to suppress your biological gender, and give you a bonus to complaining about how unfairly you are treated when everyone goes out of their way to help pay your debts and accommodate you.

Sorry but "some" so-called transgenders "are" fascist douche bags and the Wired author should be included in that group. Attacking somebody for calling a douche a douche doesn't make you morally superior...

So yeah, attack her stupid opinion about FC5 instead of attacking who or what she is. I agree she sounds insufferable and I'd probably chop my own ding dong off than spend a day listening to her talk about her beliefs, but if you want to live in a country where you can shoot guns and watch porn and send pics of your big shits to your wife on her phone, then you also have to let other people do and be what they want.

Edit: In light of Kyle's picture, BACK ON TOPIC...

I do think she misses the point that there really IS not point to FC games, as other have pointed out. I'm almost certain one of the running themes in many of the FC games is that for everything you do, for all the missions you run and all the factions you do stuff for, nothing really changes, nothing really is better or different than what it was before.

In FC2 you're in Africa during a civil war, fighting to get this journalist's tape out of the country and into the international news so that it can shed light on the atrocities. At the end, if you succeed, you see that the article is like one paragraph long and buried on page 10 of the paper.

It's much more about running people over with jeeps, lighting them on fire, and killing wild animals than it is about a message.

If Far Cry 2 had no team deathmatch (multiplay)... How do you explain all videos of multiplay team deathmatches (see one of many below)?

Your comments seem strange since there is multiplayer when you say there's not, and the fact you think my opinion is invalid coming from someone who played the game vs. like you said, you have no idea...

When you first play FC5 there is no option to even go to the silly (in my opinion) arcade, you must play through the opening act to unlock the arcade mode. Once you do that, and then open the arcade mode, you find hop in a multiplayer game (sort of), pick from the preconfigured guns where it becomes (in my opinion) pretty clear there was little to no focus put on this style (team deathmatch) of play.

Single player mode the game opens with has good graphics, funny storyline and such (again, not at all the same with multiplayer arcade mode)... if that's your thing, then go for it, for me, it's not, and valve refunded the $89.99 plus $5.62 in taxes...

If interested in seeing real FC5 clips from opening gameplay to other modes including menu system, microtransactions, some of the fun stuff, and storyline clips, also a short snip of arcade mode. In all fairness to my comments above, if you've loved single player mode of all the Far Cry's in the past, you may like FC5 as well, my love of FC2 was in the open play design of team deathmatch multiplayer (not single player or co-op modes).

I will give to you that FC2 perhaps had multiplayer but you are literally the only person i've ever heard of who bought a Far Cry game for the multiplayer. You did also say you loved Far Cry (the original) which had no multiplayer, and for anyone else wanting multiplayer especially a team deathmatch style multiplayer they would look elsewhere. I have never even thought of touching Far Cry multiplayer.
