Wire diagram of HBA or SAS Expander?

My google-fu officially sucks.

Anyone got a good tutorial on HBAs and expanders which includes a logical diagram of the circuitry or perhaps an example based upon a particular card? Even a well-written passage that follows a bit through the process would be helpful.

Just trying to wrap my head around what they do and how they do it (for a potential project).

As for specific information on cards, you can download the manuals for representative cards from HP, Adaptec, Supermicro or Areca, which usually have pretty complete manuals.
