Basically I get this error whenever I try to install my iPod on my laptop. The iPod never goes to the "Do not disconnect" screen and the computer pops up this error. I can't seem to find actual drivers for the iPod though anywhere (I've never needed them before, even on my desktop running Vista x64).

Any ideas?

Note: I posted this here because it seems to be a driver issue with Vista. If it should be moved please do move it.

If your willing to use something other than iTunes...I'm pretty sure Anapod works with Vista 64bit... it does with x86 and it's worth every penny...

I'm not using iTunes, I'm using Winamp, and this has nothing to do with the player being used. Windows does not detect and install the iPod.

Is this with a brand new iPod? Apple may have drivers for the newest ones. My wife and I both used 1st gen nano's on VIsta x64 without issue. I recently ditched mine in favor of the $99 Zune deal, but I never had any issues before. Check Apple's support site for any drivers or issues. Also, do other USB devices work on the same port?

It's a 2nd gen Nano, had it about a year now. I've checked Apple's site but can't find drivers anywhere!

Tried that, but now I get the error "the system cannot find the file specified" during the install...

UPDATE: EXACT same thing is happening with a new USB SATA enclosure I just got! I try pointing the search to C:\Windows\System32 but it comes up "USB Mass Storage Device" and says "The system cannot find the file specified"!

I've tried EVERY USB port on my laptop! Does ANYONE know how to get around this!?

(This is for the new HDD enclosure, but the iPod does the same thing...)

Check the %windir%\inf folder for a setupapi.dev.log file.

Look for any instances of !!! in the log file (check from the bottom up), there may be a little more information in there along these lines;

!!! dvi: Add Service: Failed to get configuration of service 'DRIVERNAME'.
!!! dvi: Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
!!! inf: {Install Inf Section [DRIVER.NT.Services] exit(0x00000002)}

!!! dvi: Error while installing services.

I've got the following from that file, but I've got no idea what any of it means... (I'm using [ CODE] tags so that the indentation is preserved)

What kind of external bay is it (maker, etc). I don't recognize that VID\PID combo.

Also, check the c:\windows\inf folder for usbstor.inf.

I can't imagine it's actually failing to find that one, unless it isn't on the machine at all.

... there isn't a file called "usbstor" at all in that folder, or in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

Well, all it took was downloading that file, throwing it in the folder, and BOTH DEVICES WORK.

Bah Microsoft!

Something might have been horked in your Windows installation then. That's an inbox file which should have been populated to your windows\inf folder when Vista was installed on the machine.
