i have a laptop that has no dvd drive (long story) and i want to install a copy of media center i have on it. now i have a external usb hd. if i copy the cd's i386 directory to the external hd and run it from start up will i be able to install windows via the external hd?

you'd have to image the cd to the external drive, I know with my Mac I can do that, I haven't ever had to try with a PC though, you might want to check to see if your BIOS can even boot from USB as an option.
